Cultivating Resilience in the Informal City: A Systematic Review of Urban Agriculture's Multidimensional Outcomes in Slum Contexts

open access: yesGeography Compass, Volume 20, Issue 3, March 2026.
ABSTRACT Urban agriculture (UA) in slums represents a vital yet under‐researched strategy for enhancing food security and community resilience in marginalised urban areas. This systematic review of 104 studies reveals stark contrasts in theoretical approaches: Global North scholarship frames UA through lenses of racial capitalism and gentrification ...

Detection and Genomic Characterization of Novel Respiratory Viruses in US and Mexican Cattle Farms

open access: yesTransboundary and Emerging Diseases, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Respiratory virus infections in cattle cause an estimated more than $1 billion in production losses and can threaten human health. During February 2024 to May 2025, we employed a One Health approach to surveil for respiratory viruses among cattle, farm workers, and environmental samples from 11 US and Mexican beef or dairy cattle farms.

Enteric virus with segmented double-stranded RNA genome in broiler chicken: Rotavirus, Reovirus and Picobirnavirus /
Virus entéricos RNA fita dupla, segmentado, em aves: Rotavírus, Reovírus e Picobirnavírus

open access: yesSemina: Ciências Agrárias, 2000
Enteric infections account for considerable economic losses to the poultry industry through weight loss, low food conversion, direct and indirect expenses with treatments and increased death rates.

Metagenomic characterization of swine slurry in a North American swine farm operation

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2021
Modern day large-scale, high-density farming environments are inherently susceptible to viral outbreaks, inadvertently creating conditions that favor increased pathogen transmission and potential zoonotic spread. Metagenomic sequencing has proven to be a

Initiation of RNA Polymerization and Polymerase Encapsidation by a Small dsRNA Virus. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS Pathogens, 2016
During the replication cycle of double-stranded (ds) RNA viruses, the viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRP) replicates and transcribes the viral genome from within the viral capsid.

Etiology, clinical features, and epidemiological analysis of diarrhea patients visiting a gastrointestinal clinic in a comprehensive hospital in Beijing, China, in 2023

open access: yesiLABMED, Volume 2, Issue 3, Page 197-204, September 2024.
(1) We investigated the clinical features and epidemiology of diarrhea patients and analyze the current distribution of 20 enteropathogens causing diarrhea in a comprehensive hospital in Beijing, China, in 2023. (2) The incidence of diarrhea was related to hot weather and foodborne illness.

Metagenomic Insights into the Sewage RNA Virosphere of a Large City

open access: yesViruses, 2020
Sewage-associated viruses can cause several human and animal diseases, such as gastroenteritis, hepatitis, and respiratory infections. Therefore, their detection in wastewater can reflect current infections within the source population. To date, no viral

Novel bisegmented virus (picobirnavirus) of animals, birds and humans

open access: yesAsian Pacific Journal of Tropical Disease, 2014
Picobirnaviruses (PBVs) are novel group of small, nonenveloped, bisegmented and double stranded RNA viruses. PBVs have been identified in the faeces of a broad range of hosts by several international research groups. Since attempts to culture PBV in vitro have not been made to date and no animal model of infection and disease exists.
