Classification of red blood cell shapes in flow using outlier tolerant machine learning [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The manual evaluation, classification and counting of biological objects demands for an enormous expenditure of time and subjective human input may be a source of error. Investigating the shape of red blood cells (RBCs) in microcapillary Poiseuille flow,

Piezo1 Channel Mediates Mechanically Programmable Drug Delivery to Potentiate Intravesical Chemotherapy

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study utilizes programmable mechanical pressure as a therapeutic enhancer to establish a mechano‐chemotherapy strategy. Controlled pressure activates the mechanosensitive ion channel Piezo1 in bladder cancer, triggering a calcium ion cascade that transiently and reversibly amplifies membrane permeability to chemotherapeutics.

The function of Piezo1 in hepatoblastoma metastasis and its potential transduction mechanism

open access: yesHeliyon, 2022
Background: Hepatoblastoma (HB) is the most common primary malignant liver tumor in children. The prognosis of HB metastasis is poor, despite the increasing diversity of treatment. Piezo, a ubiquitously expressed membrane mechano-transduction protein, is

Functional analyses of heteromeric human PIEZO1 Channels

open access: yesPLOS ONE, 2018
PIEZO1 and PIEZO2 are mechanosensitive channels (MSCs) important for cellular function and mutations in them lead to human disorders. We examined how functional heteromers form between subunits of PIEZO1 using the mutants E2117K, E2117D, and E2117A. Homomers of E2117K do not conduct.

Missense mutations in PIEZO1, which encodes the Piezo1 mechanosensor protein, define Er red blood cell antigens

open access: yesBlood, 2023
Abstract Despite the identification of the high-incidence red cell antigen Era nearly 40 years ago, the molecular background of this antigen, together with the other 2 members of the Er blood group collection, has yet to be elucidated.

Magneto‐X Effects in Magnetic Soft Materials and Their Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This review systematically explores magnetic soft materials (MSMs), a novel class of composites that transform under magnetic fields. It catalogs fundamental “Magneto‐X” effects, classifies materials by their matrix and magnetic fillers, and highlights transformative applications in soft robotics, biomedical devices, flexible electronics, etc. Finally,

Piezo1 expression in chondrocytes controls endochondral ossification and osteoarthritis development

open access: yesBone Research
Piezo proteins are mechanically activated ion channels, which are required for mechanosensing functions in a variety of cell types. While we and others have previously demonstrated that the expression of Piezo1 in osteoblast lineage cells is essential ...

Piezo1‐Mediated Mechanotransduction Contributes to Disturbed Flow‐Induced Atherosclerotic Endothelial Inflammation

open access: yesJournal of the American Heart Association: Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Disease
Background Disturbed flow generates oscillatory shear stress (OSS), which in turn leads to endothelial inflammation and atherosclerosis. Piezo1, a biomechanical force sensor, plays a crucial role in the cardiovascular system.

Mechanosensitive Ion Channel Piezo1 Regulates Diet-Induced Adipose Inflammation and Systemic Insulin Resistance

open access: yesFrontiers in Endocrinology, 2019
Adipocytes function as an energy buffer and undergo significant size and volume changes in response to nutritional cues. This adipocyte plasticity is important for systemic lipid metabolism and insulin sensitivity.

A Conformal Wearable Ultrasound Bioelectronics for Mechanotherapy Reprogramming of Fibroblast Plasticity via Wnt‐FGF10 Axis to Overcome Fibrotic Healing in Urethral Regeneration

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Fibrotic scarring persistently challenges urethral reconstruction. This study introduces a conformal, wearable ultrasound bioelectronic system that overcomes this by reprogramming fibroblast fate. The device activates a developmental Wnt–FGF10 axis, driving fibroblasts toward a regenerative FGF10+ phenotype that promotes angiogenesis and matrix ...
