ProPIG - Organic pig health, welfare and environmental impact across Europe [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Organic production is perceived by consumers as being superior in animal welfare and sustainability and the demand for organic pork products is slowly increasing. Within the past ten years a variety of husbandry and management systems have been developed

Transferable Deep Reinforcement Learning With Edge‐Contour‐Depth Fusion for Autonomous Wireless Capsule Endoscopy Navigation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study presents an anatomical landmark‐guided DRL framework for autonomous wireless capsule endoscopy navigation. Using a lightweight edge‐contour‐depth fusion module, it achieves over 97% coverage across diverse gastric anatomies. To ensure reliability, a two‐stage sim‐to‐real pipeline with an adaptive dynamic programming controller mitigates ...

Imputation-Based Whole-Genome Sequence Association Study Rediscovered the Missing QTL for Lumbar Number in Sutai Pigs

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
Resequencing a number of individuals of various breeds as reference population and imputing the whole-genome sequences of individuals that were genotyped with medium-density chips to perform an association study is a very efficient strategy.

Synchronization‐Dissipation in the Cardiorespiratory System

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
By modeling central nervous coupling and viscoelastic interactions in the cardiorespiratory system we show that synchronization produces a 10% gain in cardiac efficiency in humans. It is surmised that respiratory sinus arrhythmia improves cardiac pumping efficiency by reducing dynamic stress and power dissipation in the pulmonary vasculature.

Genetic and clinical studies of teat traits in the pig [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
A major goal of pig breeding is to produce sows with good longevity, which can raise many uniform litters with healthy, fast-growing piglets. The fitness of the sow, including the presence of sufficient number of functional teats, is one key to the ...

Palatable‐Food–Driven Top‐Down Circuit Inhibits PVNCRF Activity to Mitigate Stress Via Peri‐PVNCRFR1 Neurons

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Palatable food alleviates stress and prevents anxiety. This study uncovers a dedicated neural pathway: dopamine release in the PFC activates D1R neurons, whose projections to the peri‐PVN engage a population of anxiolytic CRFR1 neurons. These neurons then inhibit stress‐induced hyperactivity of PVNCRF neurons, providing a circuit‐level explanation for ...

Calculating costs of pig production with the InterPIG network [PDF]

open access: yes
This working paper presents objectives, methods and the empirical basis of the international working group InterPIG. The members of the group act within an informal network as a base for a mutual exchange of data needed for a unique way to annually ...

Topologically Structured PLLA Fibers With Stress Concentration Effects for Health Monitoring

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
In this study, a multi‐path strategy was developed to enhance the piezoelectric properties of PLLA fibers through the stress concentration effect. The optimized devices generate piezoelectric output up to 14 times that of pure PLLA fibers. This piezoelectric enhancement strategy offers a new approach for high‐performance piezoelectric devices, with ...

The archaeology of pig domestication and husbandry: approaches and case studies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
The main aim of this thesis is to present the potential of an integrated analysis for the study of past relations between humans and pigs. In particular, the advent of pig domestication and patterns of early husbandry in southern Europe will be discussed
