Seizure Mechanisms in the Piriform Cortex

1990
We are currently involved in a series of studies whose purpose is to compare and contrast the effects of kindling and long-term potentiation (LTP) in the same cortical system, the olfactory cortex. Our findings regarding LTP are presented in detail elsewhere (20,21,22,23).

Novel interneuronal network in the mouse posterior piriform cortex

Journal of Comparative Neurology, 2006
AbstractThe neural circuits of the piriform cortex mediate field potential oscillations and complex functions related to integrating odor cues with behavior, affective states, and multisensory processing. Previous anatomical studies have established major neural pathways linking the piriform cortex to other cortical and subcortical regions and major ...

Piriform Cortex and Olfactory Tubercle

2014
This chapter describes perspectives on the possible functional logic of neuronal circuits in the central olfactory system. The central olfactory system has multiplex pathways and loops that connect the olfactory bulb, olfactory cortex, neocortex, thalamus, ventral striatum, amygdala, hippocampus, and hypothalamus.

Further characteristics of long‐term potentiation in piriform cortex

Synapse, 1994
AbstractMechanisms for the induction and expression of long‐term potentiation (LTP) were studied in slices of piriform cortex. Cooperativity among afferent inputs as a controlling factor for induction of LTP was tested by pairing stimulation of one input that normally does not induce LTP with stimulation of another input.

Ultrastructural localization of immunoreactivity in the developing piriform cortex

Journal of Comparative Neurology, 1988
AbstractThe purpose of this study was to determine the ultrastructural basis for the immunoreactivity patterns in synaptic structures during development in layers I and II of the piriform cortex (PC) of rats. Antisera to cholecystokinin (CCK) and glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) were used at several different postnatal days (PN) and in adults to ...

Immunocytochemical analysis of basket cells in rat piriform cortex

Journal of Comparative Neurology, 2001
AbstractBasket cells, defined by axons that preferentially contact cell bodies, were studied in rat piriform (olfactory) cortex with antisera to γ‐aminobutyric acid (GABA)ergic markers (GABA, glutamate decarboxylase) and to peptides and calcium binding proteins that are expressed by basket cells.

Odor‐evoked activity is spatially distributed in piriform cortex

Journal of Comparative Neurology, 2003
AbstractMuch data on the olfactory bulb (OB) indicates that structural characteristics of odorant molecules are encoded as ordered, spatially consolidated sets of active cells. New results with “genetic tracing” (Zou et al. [2001] Nature 414:173–179) suggest that spatial order is also present in projections from the OB to the olfactory cortex.
