Embryonic Heart and Skin Defects in Mice Lacking Plakoglobin
Plakoglobin is the only component common to both the desmosomal plaque and the cadherin-catenin cell adhesion complex in the adherens junction. It is highly homologous to vertebrate beta-catenin and to Drosophila armadillo protein and may-like these proteins-be also involved in signaling pathways.

Exercise and the heart: unmasking Mr Hyde [PDF]
As physicians, we often face patients with cardiovascular risk factors or different kinds of heart disease. We prescribe statins, ACE inhibitors or β-blockers, but also (should) encourage our patients to engage in regular physical activity to reduce ...

Cytoplasmically Anchored Plakoglobin Induces a WNT-like Phenotype inXenopus
Plakoglobin is one of two vertebrate proteins closely related to the Drosophila segment polarity gene product armadillo. Overexpression of plakoglobin induces neural axis duplication in Xenopus and the exogenous plakoglobin is localized to nuclei (Karnovsky, A., and Klymkowsky, M. W., Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci.

Regulation of cardiovascular connexins by mechanical forces and junctions [PDF]
Connexins form a family of transmembrane proteins that consists of 20 members in humans and 21 members in mice. Six connexins assemble into a connexon that can function as a hemichannel or connexon that can dock to a connexon expressed by a neighbouring ...

The progestin receptor interactome in the female mouse hypothalamus: Interactions with synaptic proteins are isoform specific and ligand dependent [PDF]
Progestins bind to the progestin receptor (PR) isoforms, PR-A and PR-B, in brain to influence development, female reproduction, anxiety, and stress. Hormone-activated PRs associate with multiple proteins to form functional complexes. In the present study,

Desmoglein 3: a help or a hindrance in cancer progression? [PDF]
Desmoglein 3 is one of seven desmosomal cadherins that mediate cell-cell adhesion in desmosomes. Desmosomes are the intercellular junctional complexes that anchor the intermediate filaments of adjacent cells and confer strong cell adhesion thus are ...
