Pre-erythrocytic Development of Plasmodium berghei

Nature, 1965
THE fate of the sporozoites of Plasmodium berghei in rodent hosts has been the subject of much research and speculation and has drawn the attention of malariologists from, the early days of the discovery of this parasite1. For it was evident to all that this useful and easily accessible Plasmodium, an instrument of great promise in biological and ...

Plasmodium berghei: Oxidant defense system

Experimental Parasitology, 1985
Glutathione oxidant defense system protects the erythrocyte from oxidative damage. This defense system was studied in mouse erythrocytes infected with Plasmodium berghei and in isolated parasites. The efficiency of this system was found to be increased in parasitized erythrocytes compared to the normal erythrocytes.

Pyrimidine biosynthesis in Plasmodium berghei

International Journal of Biochemistry, 1981
Abstract 1. 1. The complete enzyme sequence of de novo pyrimidine biosynthesis has been found in crude extracts of Plasmodium berghei. 2. 2. Carbamoylphosphate synthase (CPS'ase) utilises l -glutamine and not ammonia as the amine group donor. 3. 3.

Disk Electrophoresis of Plasmodium berghei

The Journal of Parasitology, 1966
A method of analytic separation of soluble proteins in aqueous extracts of Plasmodium berghei is described. Extracts are prepared by sonication of suspensions of whole washed parasites obtained by saponin lysis of infected rat red cells. Separation of the extracts into reproducible electrophoretic patterns is carried out by zone electrophoresis on ...

Plasmodium berghei: Immunosuppression and hyperimmunoglobulinemia

Experimental Parasitology, 1977
Abstract Fatal Plasmodium berghei infection in BALB c mice caused permanent and complete depression of the mice's immune responsiveness to sheep erythrocytes beginning in the period of the first peak parasitemia and lasting until all the animals had died.

Chloroquine Resistance in Plasmodium Berghei

The American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 1966
Summary A strain of Plasmodium berghei was passed through mice which were maintained on a diet containing 0.008% chloroquine diphosphate and which had been treated intravenously with ethyl palmitate to destroy or diminish the phagocytic functions of the spleen.

Plasmodium berghei: Energy metabolism of sporozoites

Experimental Parasitology, 1978
Abstract The energy metabolism of Plasmodium berghei sporozoites was studied by using their motility as an indicator of energy production and consumption. Sporozoites suspended in medium without sugars or amino acids ceased to move. Motility was restored by the addition of any of several sugars or amino acids to the medium. Inhibition of sporozoite
