A Machine Learning‐Based Dynamic SST Index for Long‐Lead Malaria Prediction in the Peruvian Amazon

open access: yesGeoHealth, Volume 10, Issue 1, January 2026.
Abstract Malaria imposes a major health burden in the Peruvian Amazon, and its early warning is essential for effective disease prevention. The tropical sea surface temperature (SST) variability, fundamentally shaping the global weather patterns, may also alter malaria transmission and potentially improve its long‐lead predictability. In this study, we

Polychromophilus spp. (Haemosporida: Plasmodiidae): First Molecular Detection in Bat Flies From Brazilian Bats

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, Volume 21, Issue 1, Page 137-150, January 2026.
This study identifies Polychromophilus sp. in blood‐feeding flies (Basilia speiseri and Basilia lindolphoi) from Myotis nigricans bats in Brazil, marking the first molecular detection of the parasite in an insect vector in this country. Two haplotypes were identified, both within the Polychromophilus murinus group.

Blood Parasites and Wildlife: The Development of a Discipline

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, Volume 21, Issue 1, Page 2-10, January 2026.
Changes in our knowledge on blood parasite infections of wild animals in the last 30 years is reviewed with emphasis on taxonomy and phylogeny, impact of infections on fitness, and distribution of blood parasites. ABSTRACT In the last 30 years, the area of the study of parasitism caused by blood parasite infections on wildlife has suffered an ...

Experimental Evidence That Blood Parasite Infection Affects Incubation Patterns in a Cavity‐Nesting Songbird

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, Volume 21, Issue 1, Page 178-191, January 2026.
Chronic blood parasite infections in wild birds can affect their incubation behavior. In pied flycatchers, females with reduced parasite infections incubated for longer than control females. Despite behavioral changes, no immediate effects on fitness were observed.
