Seismic Behavior of T-Shaped Concrete-Filled Steel Tubular Column to Steel Beam Joints with Side Plates

open access: yesAdvances in Civil Engineering, 2023
This study investigates the seismic behavior of the T-shaped concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) column to steel beam joints, aimed at expanding their applicability in areas with high-seismic fortification intensity. A construction form of T-shaped CFST

Is an Apple an Orange? A Large Language Model Benchmark for Candidate Term Extraction and Subclass Decisions Against Upper Ontologies in Engineering and Materials Science

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Building machine‐readable vocabularies for materials science is slow, expert‐driven work. This study benchmarks 13 large language models on two of its first steps: finding candidate terms in engineering articles and deciding where they belong in a class hierarchy.

Efficient Ensemble Learning-Based Models for Plastic Hinge Length Prediction of Reinforced Concrete Shear Walls [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Soft Computing in Civil Engineering
Reinforced concrete shear wall (RCSW) significantly improves the seismic performance of buildings. Accurate estimation of the plastic hinge length (PHL) of RCSWs is crucial as it significantly impacts the plastic deformation, ultimate displacement, and ...

Superlubricity and Corrosion Inhibition Properties of Solvate Ionic Liquids in Hybrid Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic–Steel Interfaces

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Solvate ionic liquids lubrication reduced the coefficient of friction by ∼60% compared to dry sliding, reaching steady‐state values as low as 0.04–0.05. Corrosion weight‐loss measurements in 1 M HCl further demonstrated significant inhibition behavior, with only 100 ppm of [Li(G3)][TFSI] (∼68.5 μL/L) reducing corrosion‐product weight loss by 63 ...

Performance of Steel Bar Lap Splices at the Base of Seismic Resistant Reinforced Concrete Columns Retrofitted with FRPs—3D Finite Element Analysis

open access: yesFibers, 2022
This paper examines analytically the design criteria for the composite retrofit of reinforced concrete (RC) columns with a short lap splice length of steel rebars inside the critical region. The advanced potential of pseudo-dynamic three-dimensional (3D)

A Geometrically Transient Platform for Bioelectronic Implants

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Minimally invasive bioelectronic implants often compromise performance for smaller sizes. To resolve this optimization dilemma, a wireless bioelectronic implant with a transient geometry is introduced (MiFi). The origami‐inspired device miniaturizes up to sixfold for syringe insertion and autonomously unfolds post‐implantation.

Field‐Programmed Anisotropy in Magneto‐Piezoelectric Composites for Material‐Encoded Mechanoperception

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Field‐programmed anisotropy imparts material‐level intelligence to soft composites. Magnetic torque dynamics drive magneto‐piezoelectric nanowires from random dispersion into deterministic axial alignment. The resulting hierarchical percolation networks confine electromechanical coupling to specific axes and intrinsically decouple superposed force ...
