Climate change impacts on California's foundational trees: Demographic shifts are already underway
Abstract Climate change is a leading threat to global biodiversity. Research on climate change impacts on foundational species, which underlie the structure and function of ecosystems, is critical to developing effective conservation responses. To better understand the landscape of existing research and identify research needs, we conducted a scoping ...

Plant functional groups and root traits are linked to exudation rates of mature temperate trees
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Root exudation affects soil biogeochemistry profoundly, yet it is rarely quantified in mature, field‐grown trees and its controls are poorly understood. We measured rates of carbon (C) exudation in 11 tree species that exhibit divergent root traits, including ...

Most studies of selection on breeding timing consider only first clutches. Using a 13‐year dataset of urban and forest great tits, we show that including second broods reshapes estimates of natural selection, revealing that early breeding is favoured through increased probability of multiple brooding and higher annual reproductive output.

The rising demand for biomass highlights Populus deltoides as a productive woody species. A 6‐year study in Sumter County, SC, assessed the effects of irrigation, fertilization, and clonal variation on growth and productivity. Eight clones were studied under two irrigation levels (33 and 1500 kPa) and nutrient rates (high: up to 182 kg N ha−1; low: 50%

Phytophthora pseudocitrophthora is a new pathogen causing disease on carnations. It has a wide host range and is a candidate to become one of the most important Phytophthora species. There are differences between the symptoms caused by P. pseudocitrophthora and Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. dianthi, another important pathogen of carnations.
