Anucleate platelets circulate in the blood to facilitate thrombosis and diverse immune functions. Platelet activation leading to clot formation correlates with increased glycogenolysis, glucose uptake, glucose oxidation, and lactic acid production ...

Platelets in Viral Infections – Brave Soldiers or Trojan Horses
Viral infections are often associated with platelet activation and haemostatic complications. In line, low platelet counts represent a hallmark for poor prognosis in many infectious diseases.

HSP70 governs permeability and mechanotransduction in primary human endothelial cells
HSP70 chemical inhibition reduces endothelial cell proliferation and increases permeability, the latter supported by normal interendothelial junctional protein distribution. HSP70 also plays a role in shear stress response, a hemodynamic force naturally present in blood vessels and correlated with vessel protection.

Evolution of platelet activation parameters during septic shock in intensive care unit
During severe sepsis, platelet activation may induce disseminate microvascular thrombosis, which play a key role in critical organ failure. Crucially, most of the studies in this field have explored platelet–leukocyte interactions in animal models, or ...

dUTPases are involved in balancing the appropriate nucleotide pools. We showed that dUTPase is essential for normal development in zebrafish. The different zebrafish genomes contain several single‐nucleotide variations (SNPs) of the dut gene. One of the dUTPase variants displayed drastically lower protein stability and catalytic efficiency as compared ...

Alcohol‐induced altered glycans in human tracheal epithelial cells promote bacterial adhesion
Alcohol induces altered glycans to promote bacteria adhesion. Heavy alcohol drinking is known to increase the risk of bacterial pneumonia. However, the link between alcohol levels and risk of infection remains underexplored. Recently, we found that alcohol induced α2‐6sialo mucin O‐glycans in human tracheobronchial epithelial cells, which mediated the ...

Platelet Mediated Complement Activation [PDF]
The complement system comprises a series of proteases and inhibitors that are activated in cascade-like fashion during host defense (Makrides 1998). A growing body of evidence supports the hypothesis that immune mechanisms, including complement activation, are involved in inflammatory conditions associated with vascular injury (Acostan et al.

Evidence of platelet activation in multiple sclerosis
Objective A fatality in one multiple sclerosis (MS) patient due to acute idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) and a near fatality in another stimulated our interest in platelet function abnormalities in MS.
