Enteric Nervous System Damage by Food Contaminants: A Pathway to Neurodegeneration?

open access: yesComprehensive Reviews in Food Science and Food Safety, Volume 25, Issue 3, May 2026.
ABSTRACT The enteric nervous system (ENS), a key component of the gut–brain axis, has emerged as a critical player in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD). It is the first neural system exposed to food contaminants (FCs)—a diverse group of ubiquitous toxic compounds fortuitously present in food derived from production, processing, storage, or ...

14‐3‐3σ up‐regulation in the temporal cortex associates with tau pathology and reactive astroglia in Lewy body disorders

open access: yesBrain Pathology, Volume 36, Issue 3, May 2026.
14‐3‐3 protein homeostasis is disrupted in Lewy body pathology, showing a diminution of six isotypes and overexpression of stratifin. The latter was associated with stratifin colocalization with tau pathology and reactive astrocytes. Platelets, as a peripheral biomarker source, mirrored inversely cortical 14‐3‐3 gene expression patterns in dementia ...

Unveiling the Molecular Mechanism of Intestinal Metabolite para‐Cresol in Modulating Neuroinflammation and Synaptic Dysfunction: Implications for Autism Spectrum Disorder

open access: yesJournal of Neurochemistry, Volume 170, Issue 5, May 2026.
Here we investigated the effect of p‐Cresol on different brain‐cell types to speculate on their specific contribution to autism spectrum disorder (ASD) synaptic dysfunctions. Our in vitro data show that p‐Cresol impairs dendritic arborization and length, disrupts the excitatory/inhibitory balance, and induces glial activation and inflammatory responses.

Quantitative Mapping of Nanoscale EGFR–Grb2 Assemblies by DNA‐PAINT

open access: yesChemPhysChem, Volume 27, Issue 8, 28 April 2026.
Single‐molecule DNA‐PAINT imaging resolves the nanoscale organization of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and the adaptor protein Grb2 in cells. An analysis workflow quantitatively reports EGF‐induced EGFR reorganization, increased oligomerization, and progressive Grb2 recruitment at individual membrane‐protein assembly sites.Receptor tyrosine ...
