Supporting evidence-based analysis for modified risk tobacco products through a toxicology data-sharing infrastructure [version 2; referees: 2 approved]

open access: yesF1000Research, 2017
The US FDA defines modified risk tobacco products (MRTPs) as products that aim to reduce harm or the risk of tobacco-related disease associated with commercially marketed tobacco products.

Superfluid, staggered state, and Mott insulator of repulsively interacting three-component fermionic atoms in optical lattices

open access: yes, 2013
We review our theoretical analysis of repulsively interacting three-component fermionic atoms in optical lattices. We discuss quantum phase transitions at around half filling with a balanced population by focusing on Mott transitions, staggered ordering,

Versatile Palladium‐Catalyzed C‐H Arylation of Fluoroarenes with 2‐Chloropyridine Derivatives

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, EarlyView.
Direct C─H arylation of fluoroarenes with 2‐chloropyridines is enabled by a simple Pd/SPhos system in isopropyl acetate. The method uses inexpensive reactants and shows broad scope and high yields. DFT computations explain reactivity and selectivity.

The One‐Step Synthesis of Biologically Active Isochromans from Lignin‐Derived Aromatic Monomers in Tunable Deep Eutectic Solvents

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, EarlyView.
A straightforward one‐step protocol enables the synthesis of bio‐based and biologically active isochromans through the Oxa‐Pictet cyclization involving diverse aldehydes, including vanillin in combination with lignin‐derivable homovanillyl alcohol, a prominent aromatic platform chemical obtainable via diol‐assisted fractionation of lignocellulose ...

Estimation of inspiratory muscle effort using three common indices in various respiratory models, a bench study

open access: yesJournal of Mechanical Ventilation
Background Liberation from mechanical ventilation is a complex therapeutic challenge in the intensive care unit. Estimating inspiratory effort during mechanical ventilation can mitigate lung and diaphragmatic injury, along with weakness and atrophy ...

Pessimistic induction and two fallacies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
The Pessimistic Induction from falsity of past theories forms a perennial argument against scientific realism. This paper considers and rebuts two recent arguments—due to Lewis (2001) and Lange (2002)—to the conclusion that the Pessimistic Induction (in ...

Superfluid state of repulsively interacting three-component fermionic atoms in optical lattices

open access: yes, 2012
We investigate the superfluid state of repulsively interacting three-component (color) fermionic atoms in optical lattices. When the anisotropy of the three repulsive interactions is strong, atoms of two of the three colors form Cooper pairs and atoms of

Bayesian Optimization of Solvent‐Free Thermal Amidation via Reactive Extrusion

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, EarlyView.
Thermal amidation between a carboxylic acid and an amine was successfully conducted in an extruder in the absence of solvent, coupling agent, or catalyst, relying on an adapted Bayesian Optimization protocol. Active pharmaceutical ingredient moclobemide was synthesized on a larger scale, achieving excellent yield and low Process Mass Intensity (PMI ...

Utilization of vector bionomics, remote sensing and larval habitat characterization data to inform larval source management decision in the high malaria burden state of Kebbi, Nigeria

open access: yesMalaria Journal
Background Malaria remains a public health challenge with Nigeria having the highest burden in cases and deaths worldwide. Increased outdoor and indoor biting of Anopheles gambiae sensu lato (s.l.) and large gaps in protection have become emerging ...

Ultrasound imaging identifies the antemortem and postmortem features: PMI in euthanized dogs with an implication of cause of death may mask the imaging findings

open access: yesOpen Veterinary Journal
Background: The use of ultrasound imaging in veterinary forensic medicine is a growing field that offers a noninvasive and efficient method for assessing postmortem changes in dogs.
