Antibiotic Resistance: A Genetic and Physiological Perspective

open access: yesMedComm, Volume 6, Issue 11, November 2025.
The development of resistance to antimicrobials and their historical progression are depicted in this graphic. It draws attention to important biochemical, physiological, and genetic factors that contribute to AMR, such as the transmission of genes, the development of biofilms, and the inactivation of antibiotics.

Weight Cycling Deregulates Eating Behavior in Mice via the Induction of Durable Gut Dysbiosis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 12, Issue 32, August 28, 2025.
Weight cycling in Humans is suspected to dysregulate eating behavior. Mice submitted to body weight cycling by alternating western‐type and regular chow diets display increased hedonic appetite when exposed to a palatable diet, reminiscent of binge‐eating episodes.

Evolutionary Genetic Analysis of the Pyrazinamidase Gene in Seven Global Populations of Mycobacterium tuberculosis

open access: yesInternational Journal of Mycobacteriology
Background: This study aims to identify the signatures of natural selection in the pyrazinamidase (pncA) gene to see if genetic adaptations by Darwinian natural selection have shaped genetic composition of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb).

Screening mutations in drug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains in Yunnan, China

open access: yesJournal of Infection and Public Health, 2017
Drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB), especially multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB), is a serious medical and societal problem in China. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the mutation characteristics of drug-resistant Mycobacterium ...

An assessment of a multiplex PCR assay for differentiating clinically important mycobacteria based on pncA gene variation

open access: yesMolecular and Cellular Probes, 2003
The pncA genes in mycobacteria are responsible for the production of pyrazinamidase (PZase). In Mycobacterium tuberculosis, PZase hydrolyses pyrazinamide (PZA) to pyrazonic acid, a compound that possesses bactericidal activity against tubercle bacilli. Nucleotide sequences of pncA genes found within mycobacteria where aligned in an effort to ascertain ...

Characterization of the Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide Biosynthesis Pathway and Regulatory Mechanisms in Streptococcus mutans

open access: yesThe FASEB Journal, Volume 39, Issue 14, 31 July 2025.
This research elucidates NAD+ biosynthesis in Streptococcus mutans, revealing reliance on the nicotinic acid salvage pathway and an incomplete PnuC–NadR route. SmNiaR, a nicotinic acid‐responsive transcriptional regulator, orchestrates the transcriptional regulation of this pathway.

The pncA gene from naturally pyrazinamide-resistant Mycobacterium avium encodes pyrazinamidase and confers pyrazinamide susceptibility to resistant M. tuberculosis complex organisms [PDF]

open access: yesMicrobiology, 1997
The antituberculosis drug pyrazinamide (PZA) needs to be converted into pyrazinoic acid (POA) by the bacterial pyrazinamidase (PZase) in order to show bactericidal activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. M. avium is naturally resistant to PZA. To investigate whether this natural resistance to PZA is due to inability of the M.

The Recent Development in the Diagnosis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis

open access: yesSmart Medicine, Volume 4, Issue 2, June 2025.
Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) remains a major global health challenge due to slow, low‐sensitivity traditional diagnostics. Rapid, highly sensitive point‐of‐care tests are critical for timely diagnosis and treatment, reducing transmission. This study reviews the evolution of MTB diagnostic tests, emphasizing advancements and addressing accessibility
