A bacterial secreted translocator hijacks riboregulators to control type III secretion in response to host cell contact.

open access: yesPLoS Pathogens, 2019
Numerous Gram-negative pathogens use a Type III Secretion System (T3SS) to promote virulence by injecting effector proteins into targeted host cells, which subvert host cell processes.

An analytic approximation of the feasible space of metabolic networks

open access: yes, 2017
Assuming a steady-state condition within a cell, metabolic fluxes satisfy an under-determined linear system of stoichiometric equations. Characterizing the space of fluxes that satisfy such equations along with given bounds (and possibly additional ...

Structural Insights into the Rrp4 Subunit from the Crystal Structure of the Thermoplasma acidophilum Exosome

open access: yesBiomolecules
The exosome multiprotein complex plays a critical role in RNA processing and degradation. This system governs the regulation of mRNA quality, degradation in the cytoplasm, the processing of short noncoding RNA, and the breakdown of RNA fragments.

EF-hand protein Ca²⁺ buffers regulate Ca²⁺ influx and exocytosis in sensory hair cells [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
EF-hand Ca²⁺-binding proteins are thought to shape the spatiotemporal properties of cellular Ca²⁺ signaling and are prominently expressed in sensory hair cells in the ear.

LncRNA Binding to Mitochondrial PNPase

open access: yes
Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are relatively novel RNAs with increasingly prominent roles in regulating genetic expression, mainly in the nucleus but more recently in regions such as the mitochondrion. This study explores how lncRNAs interact with PNPase, a protein that regulates RNA import into the mitochondrion.

A human mitochondrial poly(A) polymerase mutation reveals the complexities of post-transcriptional mitochondrial gene expression [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The p.N478D missense mutation in human mitochondrial poly(A) polymerase (mtPAP) has previously been implicated in a form of spastic ataxia with optic atrophy. In this study, we have investigated fibroblast cell lines established from family members.

Bacillus subtilis trp Leader RNA: RNase J1 endonuclease cleavage specificity and PNPase processing.

open access: yesThe Journal of biological chemistry, 2009
In the presence of ample tryptophan, transcription from the Bacillus subtilis trp operon promoter terminates to give a 140-nucleotide trp leader RNA. Turnover of trp leader RNA has been shown to depend on RNase J1 cleavage at a single-stranded, AU-rich region just upstream of the 3' transcription terminator.

The Origin of Primitive Cells, Nutrient Intake, and Non-Enzymatic Elongation of Encapsulated Nucleotides [PDF]

open access: yes
Fatty acids and fatty alcohols are commonly found in experiments simulating the prebiotic 'soup'. These amphiphiles can be synthesized under prebiotic conditions, at least as long as the molecules are chemically relatively simple and do not need to be ...
