EF-hand protein Ca²⁺ buffers regulate Ca²⁺ influx and exocytosis in sensory hair cells [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
EF-hand Ca²⁺-binding proteins are thought to shape the spatiotemporal properties of cellular Ca²⁺ signaling and are prominently expressed in sensory hair cells in the ear.

Bacillus subtilis trp Leader RNA: RNase J1 endonuclease cleavage specificity and PNPase processing.

open access: yesThe Journal of biological chemistry, 2009
In the presence of ample tryptophan, transcription from the Bacillus subtilis trp operon promoter terminates to give a 140-nucleotide trp leader RNA. Turnover of trp leader RNA has been shown to depend on RNase J1 cleavage at a single-stranded, AU-rich region just upstream of the 3' transcription terminator.

On the origins of oxygenic photosynthesis and aerobic respiration in Cyanobacteria [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The origin of oxygenic photosynthesis in Cyanobacteria led to the rise of oxygen on Earth ~2.3 billion years ago, profoundly altering the course of evolution by facilitating the development of aerobic respiration and complex multicellular life.

The human exosome and PNPase. Molecular machines for controlled RNA degradation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
The human exosome is a multi-protein complex present in all eukaryotic cells, which is involved in the processing and degradation of a large variety of RNA molecules. In patients suffering from an overlap syndrome of the autoimmune diseases polymyositis (PM) and scleroderma (Scl), autoantibodies are found that are reactive with protein subunits of this

Structure and function of Campylobacter jejuni polynucleotide phosphorylase (PNPase): Insights into the role of this RNase in pathogenicity

open access: yesBiochimie
Ribonucleases are in charge of the processing, degradation and quality control of all cellular transcripts, which makes them crucial factors in RNA regulation. This post-transcriptional regulation allows bacteria to promptly react to different stress conditions and growth phase transitions, and also to produce the required virulence factors in ...

The Origin of Primitive Cells, Nutrient Intake, and Non-Enzymatic Elongation of Encapsulated Nucleotides [PDF]

open access: yes
Fatty acids and fatty alcohols are commonly found in experiments simulating the prebiotic 'soup'. These amphiphiles can be synthesized under prebiotic conditions, at least as long as the molecules are chemically relatively simple and do not need to be ...

Interplay of two small RNAs fine-tunes hierarchical flagella gene expression in Campylobacter jejuni

open access: yesNature Communications
Like for many bacteria, flagella are crucial for Campylobacter jejuni motility and virulence. Biogenesis of the flagellar machinery requires hierarchical transcription of early, middle (RpoN-dependent), and late (FliA-dependent) genes. However, little is
