Manakov solitons and polarization mode dispersion
Chaos: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Nonlinear Science, 2000The effect of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) on Manakov solitons and dispersion managed solitons is treated analytically and by numerical simulation. In the analytic approach the internal motion of the Manakov soliton is represented as a damped harmonic oscillator. The PMD functions as a white noise source driving the oscillations. It is shown that

Polarization-mode dispersion cancellation using periodic polarization modulation
SPIE Proceedings, 2003In this paper we present a novel approach allowing cancellation of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) using a technique involving periodic polarization modulation, passing the optical signal through a polarizer and then sampling it. Digital post processing following the optical polarization modulation allows significant attenuation of the PMD component

Distributed polarization-mode dispersion compensation using polarizers
IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, 2003We numerically evaluate the performance of two kinds of distributed polarization-mode dispersion compensation techniques using either linear or elliptic variable polarizers. Each in-line compensator is characterized by only one or two degrees of freedom and the average power is used as a monitor signal, which simplifies the control algorithm.

Polarization mode dispersion (PMD) is a polarization-dependent variation of a material’s index of refraction. It leads to time delays and wavenumber differences between orthogonal polarization states of light at fixed wavelength. Classically, several methods have been developed for measuring PMD [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8].

Polarization mode dispersion measurement based on continuous polarization modulation
Applied Optics, 2008A novel technique is proposed for measurement of the group delay (GD) and the differential group delay (DGD) of optical material, components, and fiber. This new method is based on continuous polarization modulation of the stimulus optical field as opposed to sequential polarization state switching used in the traditional phase shift method.

Linearly single polarization fibers with zero polarization mode dispersion
IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics, 1982The optimum waveguide structure for linearly single polarization fibers, which satisfies the large modal birefringence and the zero polarization mode dispersion simultaneously, has been investigated. The basic waveguide structure is the single-mode optical fiber that has an elliptical core and stress-applying parts with a different expansion ...

Planar lightwave circuit polarization-mode dispersion compensator
IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, 2002We fabricated an integrated-type optical PMD compensator on a silica-based planar lightwave circuit, where an endless polarization controller and a polarization-dependent delay line are installed. We confirmed its operational principle in a 43-Gbps transmission system.

Vector of polarization mode dispersion
SPIE Proceedings, 2002Investigating the Miller matrix in optical fiber, this paper derives, for the first time, the expression ofthe vector of PMD (polarization mode dispersion), expression of the Stocks vector of Principal State of Polarization (PSP), and expression of the high-order vector of PMD, which are determined by the parameters of fiber.

We report the frequency dependence of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in a PMD compensator based on six cascaded birefringent crystals separated by Faraday rotators. When all crystal axes are aligned, the device can compensate for the first-order PMD.
