Statistics of the polarization mode dispersion dynamics

Optics Letters, 2007
We characterize the joint two-time statistics of the polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) vector. Good agreement with experimental PMD measurements taken on an installed system is achieved. The results can be used to obtain the temporal evolution of the average penalty of a system close to an outage condition.

Polarization mode dispersion in short fiber lengths

Journal of the Optical Society of America A, 2006
We perform Monte Carlo simulations of the statistical properties of the differential group delay for fiber lengths less than and of the order of the birefringence correlation length. We find that the manner in which quantities related to the polarization mode dispersion evolve along the fiber depends significantly on the model assumed for the form of ...

Emulation and inversion of polarization-mode dispersion

Journal of Lightwave Technology, 2003
When a fiber is characterized by measured polarization mode dispersion (PMD) vector data, inversion of these data is required to determine the frequency dependence of the fiber's Jones matrix and, thereby, its pulse response. This tutorial reviews the principal concepts and theory employed in approaches to PMD inversion and in the closely related ...

Mitigation of polarization mode dispersion

1999 IEEE LEOS Annual Meeting Conference Proceedings. LEOS'99. 12th Annual Meeting. IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society 1999 Annual Meeting (Cat. No.99CH37009), 2003
There is a need for PMD mitigation. The increasing demand for bandwidth is driving most telecommunication operators toward the deployment of large capacity transmission systems. For distances of 300km or longer, 20% of the installed fiber plant is not suitable for 10 Gb/s transmission, and 75% is not suitable for 40 Gb/s.

Polarization mode dispersion in dispersion-shifted fibers: an exact analysis

Optics Letters, 1993
Using an exact waveguide analysis and measured stress profiles, we show that a delicate interplay between form-induced and stress-induced contributions to polarization mode dispersion in dispersion-shifted fibers can significantly reduce intrinsic short-length polarization mode dispersions.

Polarization mode dispersion for single-mode fibers with polarization dependent losses

Optics Communications, 1993
Birefringent single-mode fibers with random polarization mode coupling and polarization dependent losses are considered. The effect of these losses on polarization mode dispersion (PMD) is computed. The relevant number is found to be the differential loss between both polarization modes over one coupling length.

Polarization mode dispersion in a coil of single-mode fiber

Optics Letters, 1985
Polarization mode dispersion resulting from lateral stress by bending is measured as a function of bending curvature. The magnitude of the modal dispersion is found to be 286 psec/km for a bending radius of 2.8 mm. The experimental result is in good agreement with that predicted theoretically for bulk material.

Adaptive equalization of polarization-mode dispersion

Conference on Optical Fiber Communication/International Conference on Integrated Optics and Optical Fiber Communication, 1993
In next-generation transoceanic optical networks the polarization-dependent properties of fiber and optical components may limit the use of potential broad-band characteristics and polarization-multiplexing ability.1,2 Namihira reported an optical isolator that had a polarization-mode dispersion of 0.8 ps, which is relatively large compared with the 0 ...

Fibers With Low Polarization-Mode Dispersion

Journal of Lightwave Technology, 2004
Fibers with low polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) enable high-bit-rate time-division-multiplexed optical communication systems. These fibers are becoming increasingly important with the growing implementation of wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) transmission with channel bit rates of 40 Gb/s. Important to the realization of low PMD fibers are the

Comparison of polarization mode dispersion emulators

Journal of Lightwave Technology, 2001
We analyze polarization mode dispersion (PMD) emulators comprised of a small number of sections of polarization-maintaining fibers with polarization scattering at the beginning of each section. Unlike previously studied devices, these emulators allow the emulation of a whole ensemble of fibers. We derive an analytical expressions and determine two main
