A waveguide polarization toolset design based on mode beating [PDF]
A toolset of waveguide elements is examined, which can be combined to produce polarization functional devices in a single contiguous waveguide. In particular, waveguide implementations of an optical isolator and a polarization modulator are discussed ...

Anisotropic Airy beams are presented as solutions to the parabolic wave equation. We obtain the cross polarization terms in the new beams using the elegant Mukunda–Simon–Sudarshan matrix substitution rule for transition from Helmholtz scalar wave optics ...

Polarizing optics in a spider eye [PDF]
Many arthropods including insects and spiders exploit skylight polarization for navigation. One of the four eye pairs of the spider Drassodes cupreus is dedicated to detect skylight polarization. These eyes are equipped with a tapetum that strongly plane-polarizes reflected light.

Reconfigurable beams with arbitrary polarization and shape distributions at a given plane [PDF]
Methods for generating beams with arbitrary polarization based on the use of liquid crystal displays have recently attracted interest from a wide range of sources.

Polarization-maintaining optical microfiber [PDF]
We have successfully demonstrated a polarization-maintaining (PM) fused silica microfiber by adiabatically tapering a conventional PM fiber. Compared to standard single-mode microfibers, the proposed PM microfibers exhibit robust polarization, preserving characteristics under the presence of external perturbations, such as bending.

Polarization singularities in isotropic random vector waves [PDF]
Following Nye & Hajnal, we explore the geometry of complex vector waves by regarding them as a field of polarization ellipses. Singularities of this field are the C lines and L lines, where the polarization is purely circular and purely linear ...

While optics and mechanics are two distinct branches of physics, they are connected. It is well known that the geometrical/ray treatment of light has direct analogies to mechanical descriptions of particle motion.

Polarization-dependent losses in porous silicon ridge waveguides
Porous silicon is a material used in integrated optics with few studies on its structuration impact on the polarization in the near infra-red spectral range.

Polarization of Radiation by the Aerosol-Gas Component of the Atmosphere for Lidar Wavelengths [PDF]
The report presents an original algorithm for solving the radiation transfer equation based on the Monte Carlo method for problems of atmospheric laser sensing, taking into account the polarization of radiation.

Effective Surface Roughness Impact in Polarimetric GNSS-R Soil Moisture Retrievals
Single-pass soil moisture retrieval has been a key objective of Global Navigation Satellite System-Reflectometry (GNSS-R) for the last decade. Achieving this goal will allow small satellites with GNSS-R payloads to perform such retrievals at high ...
