Photochemical Disruption of Polyelectrolyte Multilayers

Advanced Materials, 2012
Photoreactive polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs) that dissolve upon UV irradiation are described. Light-induced switching of the formal charge of a photoreactive polycation resulted in repulsive interlayer electrostatic forces, and caused the dissolution of PEM films.

Salt Softening of Polyelectrolyte Multilayer Capsules

Langmuir, 2005
The changes in the morphology and the mechanical properties of hollow polyelectrolyte multilayer capsules made from poly(styrenesulfonate)/poly(allylamine hydrochloride) in response to added salt were investigated. We found that capsules shrink in response to salt exposure.

Ultrathin Molybdenum Polyoxometalate−Polyelectrolyte Multilayer Films

Langmuir, 1998
Ultrathin multilayer films of a novel molybdenum(VI) polyoxometalate cluster ((NH4)21[H3Mo57V6(NO)6O183(H2O)18]) (Mo57) and poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) have been prepared by the consecutive stepwise adsorption of Mo57 and PAH from dilute aqueous solution.

Where Polyelectrolyte Multilayers and Polyelectrolyte Complexes Meet

Macromolecules, 2006
We summarize existing knowledge and present some new results on the relationship between polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) growth and phase behavior of polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) in solution. Detailed understanding of competition between surface and solution as applied to PEMs requires selective labeling of polymers and/or the application of ...

Polysaccharide-based polyelectrolyte multilayers

Current Opinion in Colloid & Interface Science, 2010
In recent years, the layer-by-layer technique has grown in various fields. One of the emerging trends of bio-applications is the use of polysaccharides as main film components, which stems from their intrinsic physical, chemical and biological properties.

Formation of Polyelectrolyte Multilayers

Langmuir, 2000
A mechanism for the formation of polyelectrolyte multilayers is proposed. All of the experiments on such systems show that there is strong interpenetration of consecutive layers. We explain the very strong stability of the multilayers by the complexation between polyelectrolytes of opposite signs.

Engineering Thiolated Surfaces with Polyelectrolyte Multilayers

ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, 2019
Interfaces bearing firmly attached thiol groups are useful for many applications requiring the versatile and facile chemistry of the -SH functionality. In this work, rugged ultrathin films were prepared on substrates using layer-by-layer assembly. The surface of these smooth films was capped with a co-polymer containing benzyl mercaptan units.

Surface thermodynamic properties of polyelectrolyte multilayers

Journal of Colloid and Interface Science, 2005
Multilayer architectures of polyelectrolytes fabricated by the layer-by-layer technique (LbL) on pretreated polymeric and inorganic substrates were studied by contact angle measurements. Poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride), PDADMAC, and poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate), PSS, were used as polyelectrolytes. Contact angle data were used to calculate the

Cell Interactions with Polyelectrolyte Multilayer Films

Biomacromolecules, 2002
The short-term interactions of chondrosarcoma cells with polyelectrolyte multilayer films built up by the alternate adsorption of poly(L-lysine) (PLL) and poly(L-glutamic acid) (PGA) was studied in the presence and in the absence of serum. The films and their interaction with serum proteins were first characterized by means of optical waveguide ...

Capillary electrochromatography using polyelectrolyte multilayer coatings

Journal of Separation Science, 2005
AbstractThis review covers recent progress in polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) coatings applied to analytical separations using open‐tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT‐CEC). The simple preparation procedure involved in the PEM approach has provided some attractive features over other modes of capillary electrophoresis‐based separations ...
