Protein Adsorption Modalities on Polyelectrolyte Multilayers

Biomacromolecules, 2004
Protein adsorption on polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMUs) was evaluated using a combination of synthetic polyelectrolytes and proteins, including serum albumin, fibrinogen, and lysozyme. Variables such as surface and protein charge, polymer hydrophobicity, and hydrophilic repulsion were introduced to probe interaction mechanisms.

Self-assembled polyelectrolyte multilayers

Current Opinion in Colloid & Interface Science, 2003
Recent developments in the field of self-assembly of polyelectrolyte multilayers are presented and discussed. Fundamental studies of multilayers on planar or colloidal supports have in the past few years advanced from structural studies towards questions of the internal composition, dynamics, hydration, and interactions in multilayers.

Photopatterned Nanoporosity in Polyelectrolyte Multilayer Films

Langmuir, 2008
We report on spatial control of nanoporosity in polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) films using photopatterning and its effects on film optical and adsorption properties. Multilayers assembled from poly(acrylic acid-ran-vinylbenzyl acrylate) (PAArVBA), a photo-cross-linking polymer, and poly(allylamine hydrochloric acid) (PAH) were patterned using ...

Polyelectrolyte multilayer films under mechanical stretch

Soft Matter, 2007
Polyelectrolyte multilayers can be used to design films which respond to mechanical stimuli. The behaviors of three different polyelectrolyte multilayers deposited onto silicone sheets were investigated: PAH/PSS, PDADMA/PSS and PLL/HA films [PAH: poly(allylamine); PSS: poly(styrene sulfonate); PDADMA: poly(diallyldimethylammonium); PLL: poly(-lysine ...

Polyelectrolyte multilayered assemblies in biomedical technologies

Chemical Society Reviews, 2014
Layer-by-layer (LbL) was first introduced as a surface modification technique based on the sequential spontaneous adsorption of at least two distinct materials onto planar substrates. In the last two decades, this technique has been expanded to the coating of more convoluted geometries with high levels of tailored functionalization or with structural ...

Micropatterning Neuronal Cells on Polyelectrolyte Multilayers

Langmuir, 2004
This paper describes an approach to adhere retinal cells on micropatterned polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) lines adsorbed on poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) surfaces using microfluidic networks. PEMs were patterned on flat, oxidized PDMS surfaces by sequentially flowing polyions through a microchannel network that was placed in contact with the PDMS ...

Salt softening of polyelectrolyte multilayer microcapsules

Journal of Colloid and Interface Science, 2005
By using a combination of atomic force and confocal microscopy, we explore the effect of 1:1 electrolyte (NaCl) on the stiffness of polyelectrolyte microcapsules. We study the "hollow" and "filled" (with polystyrene sulfonate) capsules. In both cases the shells are composed of layers of alternating polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) and polyallylamine ...

Internal structure of polyelectrolyte multilayer assemblies

Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics, 2006
The paper deals with the correlation between the internal structure and dynamics of polyelectrolyte multilayers on one hand and their functional properties on the other hand. It considers different concepts of multilayer formation like driving forces, adsorption kinetics, mode of growth and stability aspects.
