A Case Report of Angioedema and Anaphylactic Shock Induced by Ingestion of Polyethylene Glycol [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Introduction: We report one of few documented cases of a severe anaphylactic reaction with angioedema to polyethylene glycol (PEG).Case Report: The patient presented 30 minutes after onset of his symptoms and quickly developed hypoxia and hypotension ...

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) study of thick lamellar stacks of phospholipid bilayers [PDF]

open access: yesPhys. Rev. E 77, 021905 (2008) (8 pages)., 2007
We report an Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) study on thick multi lamellar stacks of approx. 10 mum thickness (about 1500 stacked membranes) of DMPC (1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phoshatidylcholine) deposited on silicon wafers. These thick stacks could be stabilized for measurements under excess water or solution.

Intracellular protein crystallization in living insect cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This research protocol provides a step‐by‐step guide for applying the InCellCryst pipeline for intracellular protein crystallization. After gene cloning and generation of recombinant baculoviruses, High Five insect cells are infected for target protein crystallization.

Polyethylene Glycol-Functionalized Magnetic (Fe3O4) Nanoparticles: A Novel DNA-Mediated Antibacterial Agent

open access: yesNano Biomedicine and Engineering, 2019
The Fe3O4-PEG magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared by hydrothermal method at different concentrations (FeCl3·6H2O 0.75 mg/mL and FeCl3·6H2O 1.5 mg/mL) and subsequently surface-functionalized coating with polyethylene glycol (PEG), the successful ...

The implementation of knowledge‐based planning with partial OAR contours for prostate radiotherapy

open access: yesJournal of Applied Clinical Medical Physics, EarlyView.
Abstract Purpose Intra‐ and inter‐observer contour uncertainty is a continuous challenge in treatment planning for radiotherapy. Our proposed solution to address this challenge is the use of partial contours for treatment planning, focusing on uninvolved or non‐overlapping portions of the organs‐at‐risk (OARs) with the planning target volume (PTV ...

Polyethylene glycol improves current methods for circulating extracellular vesicle-derived DNA isolation

open access: yesJournal of Translational Medicine, 2019
Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are small membrane-bound vesicles which play an important role in cell-to-cell communication. Their molecular cargo analysis is presented as a new source for biomarker detection, and it might provide an alternative to ...

Artificial Receptor in Synthetic Cells Performs Transmembrane Activation of Proteolysis

open access: yesAdvanced Biology, EarlyView.
Transmembrane signaling is the hallmark of living cells and is among the highest challenges for the design of synthetic cells. Herein, an artificial receptor based on the chemistry of self‐immolative linkers is used to communicate information across the lipid bilayer, for transmembrane activation of enzymatic activity. Abstract The design of artificial,

Mucus Physically Restricts Influenza A Viral Particle Access to the Epithelium

open access: yesAdvanced Biology, EarlyView.
The infectious potential of respiratory viruses depends on their ability to navigate through a layer of mucus that serves as a protective barrier in the lung. It is demonstrated that influenza A virus penetration through mucus is significantly limited by the gel's internal microstructure and, to a lesser extent, by adhesive binding to mucin glycans ...

Universality in coalescence of polymeric fluid drops [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Coalescence of liquid droplets involves an interplay between capillary forces, viscous forces and inertial forces. Here, we unveil a universal temporal evolution of the neck radius during the coalescence of two polymeric drops. Through high speed imaging we demonstrate that drops of polyacrylamide (PAM), poly-vinyl alcohol (PVA), polyethylene oxide ...

Drug delivery with carbon nanotubes for in vivo cancer treatment [PDF]

open access: yesCancer Res. 68 (2008) 6652-6660, 2008
Chemically functionalized single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have shown promise in tumor targeted accumulation in mice and exhibit biocompatibility, excretion and little toxicity. Here, we demonstrate in-vivo SWNT drug delivery for tumor suppression in mice.
