Drimanes from Drimys brasiliensis with leishmanicidal and antimalarial activity
This paper evaluates CHCl3 and CH3OH extracts of the stem bark, branches and leaves of Drimys brasiliensis and drimane sesquiterpenes isolated from the stem bark against strains of Leishmania amazonensis and Leishmania braziliensis promastigotes and ...

Mode of Action of Polygodial, an Antifungal Sesquiterpene Dialdehyde [PDF]
The mechanism of polygodial antifungal action was studied using Saccharomyces cerevisiae. It inhibited the incorporation of radioactive precursors into macromolecules in whole cells. However, no specificity in the inhibition of precursor incorporation was observed among various species of macromolecules, i.e., DNA, RNA, protein, and polysaccharide.

Anthelmintic Agents from African Medicinal Plants: Review and Prospects
Soil‐transmitted helminthiasis affects more than 1.5 billion people globally and largely remains a sanitary problem in Africa. These infections place a huge economic burden on poor countries and affect livestock production, causing substantial economic losses and poor animal health. The emergence of anthelmintic resistance, especially in livestock, and

Chemical composition and anti-inflammatory evaluation of essential oils from leaves and stem barks from Drimys brasiliensis Miers (Winteraceae) [PDF]
The essential oils from leaves and stem barks from Drimys brasiliensis Miers (Winteraceae) were individually obtained by hydrodistillation and their compounds characterized by use of GC/FID and GC/MS.

Chemical and Cytotoxic Activity of three main Sesquiterpenoids from Warburgia ugandensis
Plant materials of Warburgia ugandensis have long been used in traditional African medicine due to their broad spectrum of biological activity. Here, we describe an efficient and mild isolation of three major compounds polygodial 1a, warburganal 2a, and ...

Effect of Polygodial on the Mitochondrial ATPase of Saccharomyces cerevisiae [PDF]
ABSTRACT The fungicidal mechanism of a naturally occurring sesquiterpene dialdehyde, polygodial, was investigated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae . In an acidification assay, polygodial completely suppressed the glucose-induced decrease in external pH at 3.13 μg/ml, the same as the fungicidal concentration ...
