The biosynthesis of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) was studied, for the first time, in the thermophilic bacterium Thermus thermophilus. Using sodium gluconate (1.5% w/v) or sodium octanoate (10 mM) as sole carbon sources, PHAs were accumulated to approximately 35 or 40% of the cellular dry weight, respectively.
