Generalized breakup and coalescence models for population balance modelling of liquid-liquid flows [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Population balance framework is a useful tool that can be used to describe size distribution of droplets in a liquid-liquid dispersion. Breakup and coalescence models provide closures for mathematical formulation of the population balance equation (PBE)

Upacicalcet: A Novel Intravenous Calcimimetic Agent for Patients Undergoing Hemodialysis With Secondary Hyperparathyroidism

open access: yesTherapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) is a common complication in patients receiving maintenance dialysis, driven by calcium and phosphate metabolism disturbances. Calcimimetics are central to the management of SHPT by enhancing calcium‐sensing receptor sensitivity and reducing parathyroid hormone secretion.

Mapping the evolution of mitochondrial complex I through structural variation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Respiratory complex I (CI) is crucial for bioenergetic metabolism in many prokaryotes and eukaryotes. It is composed of a conserved set of core subunits and additional accessory subunits that vary depending on the organism. Here, we categorize CI subunits from available structures to map the evolution of CI across eukaryotes. Respiratory complex I (CI)

Improving Estimates of Natural Resources Using Model-Based Estimators: Impacts of Sample Design, Estimation Technique, and Strengths of Association

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2021
Natural resource managers need accurate depictions of existing resources to make informed decisions. The classical approach to describing resources for a given area in a quantitative manner uses probabilistic sampling and design-based inference to ...

Mutation, selection, and ancestry in branching models: a variational approach

open access: yes, 2006
We consider the evolution of populations under the joint action of mutation and differential reproduction, or selection. The population is modelled as a finite-type Markov branching process in continuous time, and the associated genealogical tree is ...

Effect of a weak ion collisionality on the dynamics of kinetic electrostatic shocks [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
In strictly collisionless electrostatic shocks, the ion distribution function can develop discontinuities along phase-space separatrices, due to partial reflection of the ion population. In this paper, we depart from the strictly collisionless regime and

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Catalyst Deactivation: Control Relevance of Model Assumptions [PDF]

open access: yesModeling, Identification and Control, 2000
Two principles for describing catalyst deactivation are discussed, one based on the deactivation mechanism, the other based on the activity and catalyst age distribution.

Nonequilibrium vibrational population and donor-acceptor vibrations affecting rates of radiationless transitions

open access: yes, 2018
An analytical theory is developed for radiationless transitions in molecules characterized by nonequilibrium populations of their vibrational modes. Several changes to the standard transition-state framework follow from nonequilibrium conditions: (i) non-
