Classification of Population II Stars in the RGU System [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1973
The theoretical treatment of the blanketing effect and the first photometric results had shown that the separation of stars of different metal content should be better in the RGU system than in the UBV system. A three color photometry of the globular cluster M5 is undertaken to show the position of these stars in the RGU two-color diagram, to derive ...

PICALM::MLLT10 translocated leukemia

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This comprehensive review of PICALM::MLLT10 translocated acute leukemia provides an in‐depth review of the structure and function of CALM, AF10, and the fusion oncoprotein (1). The multifaceted molecular mechanisms of oncogenesis, including nucleocytoplasmic shuttling (2), epigenetic modifications (3), and disruption of endocytosis (4), are then ...

Black hole--neutron star and binary neutron star mergers from Population III and II stars

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics
Population III (Pop. III) stars are expected to be massive and to undergo minimal mass loss due to their lack of metals, making them ideal progenitors of black holes and neutron stars. Here, we investigate the formation and properties of binary neutron star (BNS) and black hole--neutron star (BHNS) mergers originating from Pop.

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Spectacular Nucleosynthesis from Early Massive Stars

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters
Stars that formed with an initial mass of over 50 M _⊙ are very rare today, but they are thought to be more common in the early Universe. The fates of those early, metal-poor, massive stars are highly uncertain.

Type II Cepheids: period-luminosity-metallicity relations for the Population II distance scale

open access: yesFrontiers in Astronomy and Space Sciences
Type II Cepheids are a class of pulsating variable stars that play a critical role in our understanding of stellar evolution, distance measurement and tracing the structure and kinematics of old stars in nearby galaxies.

β‐TrCP overexpression enhances cisplatin sensitivity by depleting BRCA1

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Low levels of β‐TrCP (Panel A) allow the accumulation of BRCA1 and CtIP, which facilitate the repair of cisplatin‐induced DNA damage via homologous recombination (HR) and promote tumor cell survival. In contrast, high β‐TrCP expression (Panel B) leads to BRCA1 and CtIP degradation, impairing HR repair, resulting in persistent DNA damage and apoptosis ...

Hidden Population III Descendants in Ultrafaint Dwarf Galaxies

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
The elusive properties of the first (Population III or Pop III) stars can be indirectly unveiled by uncovering their true descendants. To this end, we exploit our data-calibrated model for the best-studied ultrafaint dwarf galaxy (UFD), Boötes I, which ...

PARP inhibitors elicit distinct transcriptional programs in homologous recombination competent castration‐resistant prostate cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
PARP inhibitors are used to treat a small subset of prostate cancer patients. These studies reveal that PARP1 activity and expression are different between European American and African American prostate cancer tissue samples. Additionally, different PARP inhibitors cause unique and overlapping transcriptional changes, notably, p53 pathway upregulation.

Metal-polluted Population III Galaxies and How to Find Them

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters
Observing Population III (hereafter PopIII) galaxies, the hosts of first-generation stars, remains challenging even with the JWST. The current few candidates have been identified through the combination of a prominent He II emission and the absence of ...
