An empirical investigation of temporal and technical post-editing effort

Translation and Interpreting Studies, 2007
This article reports on a study designed to quantify temporal and technical post-editing effort in machine translated texts. The study involved two groups of English>German translators, one instructed to post-edit a machine-translated text and the other to translate the same text from English into German.

Cognitive effort in human translation and machine translation post-editing processes

FORUM. Revue internationale d’interprétation et de traduction / International Journal of Interpretation and Translation, 2023
Abstract Due to the inaccuracies of Machine Translation (MT), Post-Editing (PE) is inevitable. This poses questions over whether human effort to polish an MT is worthwhile or whether it would be more efficient to translate manually. However, to date, fewer attempts have been made to compare the cognitive effort in the PE process and the sub-phases ...

Cognitive Demand and Cognitive Effort in Post-Editing

2018
The pause to word ratio, the number of pauses per word in a post-edited MT segment, is an indicator of cognitive effort in post-editing (Lacruz and Shreve, 2014). We investigate how low the pause threshold can reasonably be taken, and we propose that 300 ms is a good choice, as pioneered by Schilperoord (1996).

Effort in Machine Translation Post-Editing: The Role of Expertise

Cankaya University Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
Machine translation post-editing is becoming an increasingly important part of the translation process, boosting efficiency. As the primary aim of technology is to reduce human effort, the concept of effort has been widely investigated in this context.

Methodologies for Measuring the Correlations between Post-Editing Effort and Machine Translatability

Machine Translation, 2005
Against the background of a wider research project that aims to investigate the correlation, if any, between post-editing effort and the presence of negative translatability indicators in source texts submitted to Machine Translation (MT), this paper sets out to assess the potential of two methods for measuring the effort involved in post-editing MT ...

Morphological complexity as a predictor of cognitive effort in neural machine translation post-editing

Translation, Cognition & Behavior
Abstract This study examines how morphological complexity affects cognitive effort in neural machine translation (NMT) post-editing across six languages. Analysis of the DivEMT dataset shows that morphologically richer target languages like Ukrainian and Turkish require more editing time, keystrokes, and frequent pauses, indicating higher
