The focal adhesion: a regulated component of aortic stiffness. [PDF]
Increased aortic stiffness is an acknowledged predictor and cause of cardiovascular disease. The sources and mechanisms of vascular stiffness are not well understood, although the extracellular matrix (ECM) has been assumed to be a major component.

Correlated-electron description of the photophysics of thin films of $\pi$-conjugated polymers
We extend Mulliken's theory of ground state charge transfer in a donor-acceptor complex to excited state charge transfer between pairs of identical $\pi$-conjugated oligomers, one of which is in the optically excited state and the other in the ground ...

Variation in arboreality across gorilla populations is associated with systematic differences in manual digital lengths. Using a new dataset of linear metrics from the Bwindi mountain gorillas, we quantify metacarpal and phalangeal lengths in eastern and western gorilla populations across all five rays. Consistent with quantified behavioral differences,

A Family of PP2 Phosphatases in Plasmodium falciparum and Parasitic Protozoa: Reply [PDF]
The life cycle of Plasmodium is complex. Even within the sexual phase, there are a number of distinct developmental processes. These include: gametocytogenesis, formation of both male and female gametocytes, exflagellation (which results in the release of eight motile male gametes from a single male gametocyte); fertilization of the extracellular ...

Abstract Drought is a critical challenge to wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) productivity. The quantitative complexity of drought tolerance makes breeding for this trait difficult. Developing near‐isogenic lines (NILs) targeting quantitative trait locus (QTL) for 1000‐grain weight (TGW) under drought stress can effectively identify key mechanisms and genes.

A three‐dimensional biomechanical model of the musculoskeletal system is used to analyse the potential locomotor functions of the small (~1 kg) Late Triassic archosaurian reptile Gracilisuchus stipanicicorum. The study finds that, potentially like the ancestral archosaur, this taxon was probably quadrupedal, plantigrade and neither strongly sprawling ...
