Models for Understanding Versus Models for Prediction [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
According to a standard point of view, statistical modelling consists in establishing a parsimonious representation of a random phenomenon, generally based upon the knowledge of an expert of the application field: the aim of a model is to provide a better understanding of data and of the underlying mechanism which have produced it.

TRAIL‐PEG‐Apt‐PLGA nanosystem as an aptamer‐targeted drug delivery system potential for triple‐negative breast cancer therapy using in vivo mouse model

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aptamers are used both therapeutically and as targeting agents in cancer treatment. We developed an aptamer‐targeted PLGA–TRAIL nanosystem that exhibited superior therapeutic efficacy in NOD/SCID breast cancer models. This nanosystem represents a novel biotechnological drug candidate for suppressing resistance development in breast cancer.

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Modelling and model predictive control of magnetic levitation laboratory plant

open access: yes, 2017
The paper is focused on creating a mathematical model of a magnetic levitation plant and usage of the model for a design of a predictive controller. The magnetic levitation laboratory plant CE 152 by Humusoft Company is used to determine values of model ...

Circular RNA expression landscapes in myelodysplastic neoplasms: Associations with mutational signatures and disease progression

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
In this explorative study, the abundance of circular RNA molecules in bone marrow stem cells was found to be elevated in patients with high‐risk myelodysplastic neoplasms, and to be associated with an increased risk of progression to acute myeloid leukemia.

A Predictive Modelling Study for Using High Hydrostatic Pressure, a Food Processing Technology, for Protein Extraction

open access: yes, 2016
The aim of this study is to fit a response model to one response, extracted protein concentration by using high hydrostatic pressure, a food processing technology, as a function of two particular controllable factors of extraction procedure.

Subtype‐specific enhancer RNAs define transcriptional regulators and prognosis in breast cancers

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study employed machine learning methodologies to perform the subtype‐specific classification of RNA‐seq data sets, which are mapped on enhancers from TCGA‐derived breast cancer patients. Their integration with gene expression (referred to as ProxCReAM eRNAs) and chromatin accessibility profiles has the potential to identify lineage‐specific and ...

Uncertainty in modelling human-landscape interactions

open access: yes, 2005
Recent involvement in designing and developing a simulation model to allow interaction between biophysical, economic and social processes has also led to interest in uncertainty and error propagation in models.

Investigating five key predictive text entry with combined distance and keystroke modelling

open access: yes, 2008
This paper investigates text entry on mobile devices using only five-keys. Primarily to support text entry on smaller devices than mobile phones, this method can also be used to maximise screen space on mobile phones.

Analysis of risk factors and construction of a predictive model for contralateral occult carcinoma in patients with unilateral papillary thyroid carcinoma

open access: yesFrontiers in Endocrinology
ObjectiveThis study aims to investigate the risk factors associated with contralateral occult carcinoma in patients with unilateral papillary thyroid carcinoma and to develop a corresponding prediction model to enhance early detection and clinical ...
