Biosynthesis of 3β‐hydroxy‐5,7‐pregnadien‐20‐one by the horse fetal gonad

open access: yesFEBS Letters, 1983
The production of equilin and the other ring B‐unsaturated estrogens by the pregnant mare is anomalous in that they are biosynthesised by a cholesterol‐independent pathway. Fetal horse gonads were incubated with tritiated sodium acetate and radiochemically pure 3β‐hydroxy‐5,7‐pregnadien‐20‐one and 3β‐hydroxy‐5,7‐androstadien‐17‐one were isolated.

A Distinct MaoC-like Enoyl-CoA Hydratase Architecture Mediates Cholesterol Catabolism in Mycobacterium tuberculosis

open access: yesACS Chemical Biology, 2014
The Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) igr operon plays an essential role in Mtb cholesterol metabolism, which is critical for pathogenesis during the latent stage of Mtb infection.

Guggulsterone (GS) inhibits smokeless tobacco and nicotine-induced NF-κB and STAT3 pathways in head and neck cancer cells.

open access: yesCarcinogenesis, 2011
Understanding the molecular pathways perturbed in smokeless tobacco- (ST) associated head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is critical for identifying novel complementary agents for effective disease management.

Identification of the aldolase responsible for the production of 22‐hydroxy‐23,24‐bisnorchol‐4‐ene‐3‐one from natural sterols in Mycolicibacterium smegmatis

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, Volume 17, Issue 1, January 2024.
We have identified the MSMEG_6561 gene, encoding an aldolase responsible for the transformation of 22‐hydroxy‐3‐oxo‐cholest‐4‐ene‐24‐carboxyl‐CoA (22‐OH‐BCN‐CoA) into the 22‐hydroxy‐23,24‐bisnorchol‐4‐ene‐3‐one (4‐HBC) precursor (20S)‐3‐oxopregn‐4‐ene‐20‐carboxaldehyde (3‐OPA).

Mycobacterium tuberculosis exploits a heterohexameric enoyl-CoA hydratase retro-aldolase complex for cholesterol catabolism.

open access: yesBiochemistry, 2019
Cholesterol catabolism plays an important role in Mycobacterium tuberculosis's (Mtb's) survival and persistence in the host. Mtb exploits three β-oxidation cycles to fully degrade the side-chain of cholesterol.

Role of macrophage 11β-HSD1 in inflammation mediated angiogenesis, arthritis and obesity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (11β-HSD1, encoded by Hsd11b1) is an enzyme that predominantly converts inactive glucocorticoids (cortisone in human and most mammals, 11dehydro-corticosterone in mice and rats) into their active forms (cortisol
