Cell‐free and extracellular vesicle microRNAs with clinical utility for solid tumors

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Cell‐free microRNAs (cfmiRs) are small‐RNA circulating molecules detectable in almost all body biofluids. Innovative technologies have improved the application of cfmiRs to oncology, with a focus on clinical needs for different solid tumors, but with emphasis on diagnosis, prognosis, cancer recurrence, as well as treatment monitoring.

Cellular liquid biopsy provides unique chances for disease monitoring, preclinical model generation and therapy adjustment in rare salivary gland cancer patients

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We quantified and cultured circulating tumor cells (CTCs) of 62 patients with various cancer types and generated CTC‐derived tumoroid models from two salivary gland cancer patients. Cellular liquid biopsy‐derived information enabled molecular genetic assessment of systemic disease heterogeneity and functional testing for therapy selection in both ...

Gut microbiota diversity is prognostic and associated with benefit from chemo‐immunotherapy in metastatic triple‐negative breast cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, Volume 19, Issue 4, Page 1229-1243, April 2025.
We assessed the associations between the gut microbiota and outcome in metastatic triple‐negative breast cancer patients treated with chemotherapy alone or chemotherapy in combination with immunotherapy. Our data indicate that high gut microbiota alpha diversity was associated with improved clinical outcome and with benefit from immunotherapy.

Volume preserving mean curvature flow for star-shaped sets [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
We study the evolution of star-shaped sets in volume preserving mean curvature flow. Constructed by approximate minimizing movements, our solutions preserve a strong version of star-shapedness. We also show that the solutions converges to a ball as time goes to infinity. For asymptotic behavior of the solutions we use the gradient flow structure of the

Plasma‐activated media selectively induces apoptotic death via an orchestrated oxidative stress pathway in high‐grade serous ovarian cancer cells

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, Volume 19, Issue 4, Page 1170-1187, April 2025.
High‐grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC) is the most common and aggressive type of ovarian cancer with urgent need for new treatment strategies. This study evaluates plasma‐activated media (PAM) as a novel treatment for HGSOC, showing its ability to selectively induce oxidative stress and apoptosis in HGSOC cell lines, patient ascites cells and primary

Preservation of convexity of solutions to parabolic equations

open access: yesJournal of Differential Equations, 2004
AbstractIn the present paper we find necessary and sufficient conditions on the coefficients of a parabolic equation for convexity to be preserved. A parabolic equation is said to preserve convexity if given a convex initial condition, any solution of moderate growth remains a convex function of the spatial variables for each fixed time.

MicroRNAs in seminal plasma are able to discern infertile men at increased risk of developing testicular cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, Volume 19, Issue 4, Page 1188-1202, April 2025.
Male infertility is a known risk factor for the development of testicular cancer. In this paper, we analyzed the expression profile of a microRNA panel by real‐time PCR and validated the results by digital PCR. Experimental and bioinformatics analyses allowed us to identify possible biomarkers able to discern men with a higher risk of developing ...

Digital preservation practices in academic libraries in South Africa in the wake of the digital revolution

open access: yesSouth African Journal of Information Management, 2019
Background: The preservation of digital resources in academic institutions in South Africa is an imperative because of the proliferation of digital resources and the realities of the digital revolution. The study focused on digital preservation practices

Polyfunctional CD8+CD226+RUNX2hi effector T cells are diminished in advanced stages of chronic lymphocytic leukemia

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, Volume 19, Issue 5, Page 1347-1370, May 2025.
CD226+CD8+ T cells express elevated levels of RUNX2, exhibit higher proliferation capacity, cytokines and cytolytic molecules expression, and migratory capacity. In contrast, CD226−CD8+ T cells display an exhausted phenotype associated with the increased expression of co‐inhibitory receptors and impaired effector functions.

Preservation of Methane Hydrates Prepared from Dilute Electrolyte Solutions

open access: yesInternational Journal of Chemical Engineering, 2009
The anomalous or self-preservation of methane hydrate at atmospheric pressure and temperatures below the ice point was investigated to determine whether this phenomenon might have applications in the storage and transportation of natural gas.
