Assessing the Diagnostic Validity of Torsobarography in Scoliosis

open access: yesSensors
Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is treated with various forms of conservative care or surgery, depending on the degree of severity. When AIS is detected early, it can be monitored and initially treated with reduced invasiveness to prevent further ...

Cell geometry and membrane protein crowding constrain Escherichia coli growth rate, overflow metabolism, respiration, and maintenance energy

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The physical dimensions and shape of bacterial cells define the surface area available to acquire nutrients and the volume available for synthesizing proteins and DNA. Here, we use computational systems biology to decode the importance of cell geometry as a major determinant of prokaryotic phenotype, including growth rate and metabolic efficiency. This

Salmonella lipopolysaccharide‐containing supported lipid bilayers as platforms to study bacteriophage interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

From mice to humans—divergent strategies for intestinal homeostasis and regeneration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Recent advances such as organoid genome editing, xenotransplantation, imaging, and whole‐genome sequencing have enabled direct studies of human intestinal stem cells (ISCs). These studies reveal species‐specific features, including slower ISC proliferation, distinct injury responses, slower somatic mutation accumulation in humans, and an inverse ...

Modelling stem cell differentiation related processes—A practical overview for biologists

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Stem cell differentiation is complex and difficult to control experimentally. This review introduces suitable computational modelling approaches that can support stem cell research, from mechanistic ODE and abstract models to multiscale and deep learning methods.

Fluid flow and heat transfer of a two-dimensional offset jet with a plasma actuator

open access: yesNihon Kikai Gakkai ronbunshu, 2017
This study is concerned with the active flow control of a two-dimensional offset jet using a dielectric barrier discharge plasma actuator (PA). The offset jet is produced by the flow of air that issues from the end of a long parallel channel, and the ...

Design and analysis strategies for robust microbiome ageing research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The gut microbiome changes with age and associates with age‐related morbidity and mortality, establishing it as a potential biomarker and intervention target for ageing. Realising this potential requires methodological rigour, yet distinguishing biological signals from methodological artefacts remains challenging across cohorts. This review provides an

Control of two-dimensional offset jet using burst modulation with a plasma actuator

open access: yesNihon Kikai Gakkai ronbunshu, 2018
An experimental study is performed on a two-dimensional offset jet with a dielectric barrier discharge plasma actuator (PA) as a flow control device that introduces a periodic disturbance to the system. The offset jet is produced by a flow of air emitted

TRAIL‐PEG‐Apt‐PLGA nanosystem as an aptamer‐targeted drug delivery system potential for triple‐negative breast cancer therapy using in vivo mouse model

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aptamers are used both therapeutically and as targeting agents in cancer treatment. We developed an aptamer‐targeted PLGA–TRAIL nanosystem that exhibited superior therapeutic efficacy in NOD/SCID breast cancer models. This nanosystem represents a novel biotechnological drug candidate for suppressing resistance development in breast cancer.

Effect of the contact pressure on the fretting of railway axle journal bearings

open access: yesNihon Kikai Gakkai ronbunshu, 2016
The fretting wear is caused by the very slight relative slip between the contacting surfaces of the inner ring side face and the backing ring of an axle journal bearing in railway applications, but its mechanism is not clear.
