Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Conclusive Presumptions in West Virginia

open access: yes, 1959
Presumptions, as might be expected, have been appearing and disappearing throughout the history of evidence. Much confusion has attended the use of the word, and there has been no less confusion about the kinds of presumptions, be they presumptions of ...

Subsequent strabismus surgeries in patients with no prior medical records

open access: yesIndian Journal of Ophthalmology, 2018
Purpose: To investigate subsequent strabismus surgeries in patients with no prior medical record and to evaluate discrepancies between surgical findings and preoperative presumptions made based on patient self-reporting and clinical findings.

False Presumptions Counter to the Presumptions of Innocence

open access: yesJournal of the American Institute of Criminal Law and Criminology, 1917
American criminal procedure is condemned as ineffective, because delay and technicality intervene on behalf of the accused. The sanction of the law is neither swift nor inexorable. Not only do "the wicked flee where no man pursueth," but the prisoner enmeshed is preserved from punishment by over-sedulous respect for his rights. Mr.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

The Public Face of Presumptions

open access: yes, 2008
We commonly think of presumptions as second-best inferential tools allowing us to reach conclusions, if we must, under conditions of limited information.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

A challenge to change developments in feminist theology and feminist Christology

open access: yesHTS Teologiese Studies/Theological Studies, 2005
Contextual theologies have made it clear that context, and the particular experiences a context gives, shapes thinking about the Divine and the world into a particular, contextual theology.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.
