Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Priming and memory of stress responses in organisms lacking a nervous system

open access: yesBiological Reviews of The Cambridge Philosophical Society, 2016
Experience and memory of environmental stimuli that indicate future stress can prepare (prime) organismic stress responses even in species lacking a nervous system. The process through which such organisms prepare their phenotype for an improved response

A paradox of syntactic priming: why response tendencies show priming for passives, and response latencies show priming for actives [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Speakers tend to repeat syntactic structures across sentences, a phenomenon called syntactic priming. Although it has been suggested that repeating syntactic structures should result in speeded responses, previous research has focused on effects in ...

PICALM::MLLT10 translocated leukemia

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This comprehensive review of PICALM::MLLT10 translocated acute leukemia provides an in‐depth review of the structure and function of CALM, AF10, and the fusion oncoprotein (1). The multifaceted molecular mechanisms of oncogenesis, including nucleocytoplasmic shuttling (2), epigenetic modifications (3), and disruption of endocytosis (4), are then ...

A visual M170 effect of morphological complexity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Recent masked priming studies on visual word recognition have suggested that morphological decomposition is performed prelexically, purely on the basis of the orthographic properties of the word form. Given this, one might expect morphological complexity

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Thinking in Chinese vs. Thinking in English: Social Preference and Risk Attitudes of Multicultural Minds [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper investigates whether language priming activates different cultural identities and norms associated with the language communicated with respect to social preference and risk attitudes.

Two prime or not two prime

open access: yesNature Catalysis, 2018
The carboxylation of aromatic compounds with CO2 is an attractive reaction, albeit limited in scope. Now, bulky ligands in a Rh(II) catalysed C–H carboxylation of 2-arylphenols are shown to override the standard ortho/para Kolbe-Schmitt-type regioselectivity allowing instead carboxylation at 2’

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

A prime prime primer

open access: yes, 2004
We present a simple, closed formula which gives all the primes in order. It is a simple product of integer floor and ceiling functions.
