Conceptual and Procedural Knowledge

International Journal of Technology and Design Education, 1997
The ideas that underlie the title of this chapter have been part of a familiar debate in education, namely that of the contrast of content and process. In both science and mathematics similar arguments have taken place, and these debates represent a healthy examination of, not only the aims of science and mathematics education, but the teaching and ...

Automatic acquisition of domain and procedural knowledge

Proceedings of the first international conference on Industrial and engineering applications of artificial intelligence and expert systems - IEA/AIE '88, 1988
The design concept and performance of AKAS, an automated knowledge-acquisition system for the development of expert systems, are discussed. AKAS was developed using the FLES knowledge base for the electrical system of the B-737 aircraft and employs a 'learn by being told' strategy. The system comprises four basic modules, a system administration module,

Adversarial search with procedural knowledge heuristic

International Joint Conference on Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems, 2009
We introduce an adversarial planning algorithm based on game tree search, which is applicable in large-scale multiplayer domains. In order to tackle the scalability issues of game tree search, the algorithm utilizes procedural knowledge capturing how individual players tend to achieve their goals in the domain; the information is used to limit the ...

Learning procedural knowledge through observation

Proceedings of the 1st international conference on Knowledge capture, 2001
The research presented here describes a framework that provides the necessary infrastructure to learn procedural knowledge from observation traces annotated with goal transition information. One instance of a learning-by-observation system, called KnoMic (Knowledge Mimic), is developed within this framework and evaluated in a complex domain.

Goal-Oriented Conceptualization of Procedural Knowledge

2012
Conceptualizing procedural knowledge is one of the most challenging tasks of building systems for intelligent tutoring. We present an algorithm that enables teachers to accomplish this task semi automatically. We used the algorithm on a difficult king, bishop, and knight versus the lone king (KBNK) chess endgame, and obtained concepts that could serve ...

Procedural Knowledge

2010
In this paper I argue that there are cases of procedural knowledge (knowledge how), which, contrary to Stanley and Williamson (2001), cannot be construed as instances of propositional knowledge (knowledge that). These include cases of knowledge lacking (occurrent) belief and of knowledge equivalent to some acquired or inherited disposition to act ...

Ethics, knowledge, and a procedural approach to wellbeing

Inquiry, 2018
Knowledge about human wellbeing is a central part of ethical knowledge. But it is a neglected topic not only in ethics in general, but also in wellbeing theorizing, which has focused on enumerating...
