Genome Announcement: Draft Genome Assembly of Heterodera humuli Generated Using Long-Read Sequencing

open access: yesJournal of Nematology
The hop cyst nematode, Heterodera humuli, is the most common plant-parasitic nematode associated with hop worldwide. This study reports the draft genome of H.

Implications of Smallholder Farm Production Diversity for Household Food Consumption Diversity: Insights from Diverse Agro-Ecological and Market Access Contexts in Rural Tanzania

open access: yesHorticulturae, 2018
Owing to persistent challenges of food and nutritional insecurity, recent literature has focused on the role diversity of farm production has on food consumption diversity, particularly for smallholder households.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Diversity and Spatial Productivity Growth

open access: yes
Abstract Various strands of literature analyse the role of product diversity in influencing long-run growth and development. First, product diversification is at the heart of modern economic development and innovation-based endogenous growth theories.

Productivity–diversity patterns in arctic tundra vegetation

open access: yesEcography, 2012
Productivity has long been argued to be a major driver of species richness patterns. In the present study we test alternative productivity–diversity hypotheses using vegetation data from the vast Eurasian tundra. The productivity–species pool hypothesis predicts positive relationships at both fine and coarse grain sizes, whereas the productivity ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Production Choices and Food Security: A Review of Studies Based on a Micro-Diversity Perspective

open access: yesFoods
Given the ‘subsistence’ character of smallholder production, agricultural production diversification is often seen as an effective strategy for smallholders to improve their diets’ diversity and nutritional status, yet the existing evidence remains ...
