The Kinetics of Amyloid Fibril Formation by de Novo Protein Albebetin and Its Mutant Variants

open access: yesBiomolecules, 2020
Engineering of amyloid structures is one of the new perspective areas of protein engineering. Studying the process of amyloid formation can help find ways to manage it in the interests of medicine and biotechnology.

Matrix metalloproteinase‐9 regulates cell adhesion and membrane protrusive activity of ovarian cancer cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Matrix metalloproteinase‐9 (MMP9) drives ovarian cancer progression. Using MMP9‐null cells (M9‐KO) created from ovarian cancer cells, we found MMP9 loss did not block Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF)‐driven E‐cadherin dissolution or EMT but delayed and reduced EGF‐driven membrane protrusions. Transient MMP9 re‐expression drove membrane protrusion.

Experimental procedures to investigate fibrillation of proteins

open access: yesMethodsX, 2023
The unwanted phenomenon of protein fibrillation is observed in vivo and during therapeutic protein development in the industry. Protein aggregation is associated with various degenerative disorders and might induce immune-related challenges post-administration of biopharmaceutics.

ALS With and Without Upper Motor Neuron Signs: A Comparative Study Supporting the Gold Coast Criteria

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective The Gold Coast criteria permit diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) even without upper motor neuron (UMN) signs. However, whether ALS patients with UMN signs (ALSwUMN) and those without (ALSwoUMN) share similar characteristics and prognoses remains unclear.

Copurification of actin and desmin from chicken smooth muscle and their copolymerization in vitro to intermediate filaments [PDF]

open access: yes, 1979
Desmin is a 50,000-mol wt protein that is enriched along with 100-A filaments in chicken gizzard that has been extracted with 1 M KI. Although 1 M KI removes most of the actin from gizzard, a small fraction of this protein remains persistently insoluble,

Harnessing Fungal Biowelding for Constructing Mycelium‐Engineered Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Mycelium‐bound composites (MBCs) offer low‐carbon alternatives for construction, yet interfacial bonding remains a critical challenge. This review examines fungal biowelding as a biocompatible adhesive, elucidating mycelium‐mediated interfacial mechanisms and their role in material assembly. Strategies to optimize biowelding are discussed, highlighting

Different Amyloid-β Self-Assemblies Have Distinct Effects on Intracellular Tau Aggregation. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology is characterized by the aggregation of beta-amyloid (Aβ) and tau in the form of amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in the brain.

3D (Bio) Printing Combined Fiber Fabrication Methods for Tissue Engineering Applications: Possibilities and Limitations

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Biofabrication aims at providing innovative technologies and tools for the fabrication of tissue‐like constructs for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications. By integrating multiple biofabrication technologies, such as 3D (bio) printing with fiber fabrication methods, it would be more realistic to reconstruct native tissue's ...

Interactions of Amyloid Fibrils with Functional Proteins: Modulating Effect of Polyphenols

open access: yesEast European Journal of Physics
The elucidation of interactions between functional proteins and amyloid fibrils is crucial for understanding the molecular basis of amyloid diseases, which are characterized by protein misfolding and aggregation.

The regions of the sequence most exposed to the solvent within the amyloidogenic state of a protein initiate the aggregation process. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Formation of misfolded aggregates is an essential part of what proteins can do. The process of protein aggregation is central to many human diseases and any aggregating event needs to be prevented within a cell and in protein design.
