Protein Structure Computation

2007 Frontiers in the Convergence of Bioscience and Information Technologies, 2007
The field of protein structure representation and manipulation has received a great amount of interest during the past fifteen years. Research has come from the biochemical, medical, and physical sciences, in particular for the development of rational drug discovery methods.

Deconstructing protein structure

Current Biology, 1991
Proteins are responsible for many important cellular functions, and in order to fulfrtl its role, each protein must fold correctly into a unique three-dimensional structure. Three decades of research on a wide variety of proteins have confirmed Anfinsen’s originaI demonstration that the primary ammo acid sequence encodes all the information necessary ...

Protein Structure Prediction

Science, 1996
Elizabeth Pennisi's Research News article “Teams tackle protein prediction” ([26 July, p. 426][1]) describes an ongoing project, known as CASP (for Critical Assessment of Techniques for Protein Structure Prediction) ([1][2]), to provide researchers who model protein structures with the opportunity to jointly make bona fide predictions, announced before

Encephalitogenic Protein: Structure

Science, 1969
Amino acid sequences of encephalitogenic proteins from bovine cord and rabbit brain are reported. The bovine protein contains 45 residues. The rabbit protein is identical except for two isopolar substitutions, a dipeptide and amino acid deletion. Analysis of this protein and a 140-residue myelin basic protein indicates that the smaller protein is a ...

Comparison of protein structures

1985
Publisher Summary This chapter presents various techniques that have been used to establish similarity in protein folds. The chapter discusses ways in which structural correspondence can be measured and how such measures can be used to attempt to estimate the probability that a given correspondence might have arisen through convergence or divergence.

Helical Structures in Proteins

Biomacromolecules, 2001
We examine a minimal model for helix-forming polymers. The monomer-monomer potential energy is based on the anisotropic potentials seen in proteins and is used in conjunction with a wormlike backbone. We show that the coil-helix transition involves four states.

Protein structure similarities

Current Opinion in Structural Biology, 2001
Comparison of protein structures can reveal distant evolutionary relationships that would not be detected by sequence information alone. This helps to infer functional properties. In recent years, many methods for pairwise protein structure alignment have been proposed and are now available on the World Wide Web.

Terminology of Protein Structure

Nature, 1961
I WISH to suggest a revision in the practice of discussing proteins in terms of primary, secondary, andtertiary structures. This terminology, introduced by Linderstrom-Lang in his Lane Memorial Lectures1, served well in the few years since it was invented, and has thoroughly permeated the literature.

Prediction of Protein Structure

2004
Publisher Summary This chapter describes the extraction of structural information from protein sequence. The deduced sequences of proteins provide invaluable insights into the functions of those proteins and the evolution of the organisms producing those proteins.
