Sugar Treatments Can Induce AcLEAFY COTYLEDON1 Expression and Trigger the Accumulation of Storage Products during Prothallus Development of Adiantum capillus-veneris [PDF]
A seed is an intricate structure. Of the two development processes involved in seed formation, seed maturation, or seed program includes accumulation of storage products, acquisition of desiccation tolerance, and induction of dormancy.

An enhancer trap system to track developmental dynamics in Marchantia polymorpha. [PDF]
Significance Statement The liverwort Marchantia polymorpha is an emerging model species with huge potential for synthetic biology. We generated an enhancer trap library as a resource for Marchantia research and characterized marker lines for several important cell types (rhizoids, thallus margin, apical notch and oil cells).

Cellular basis of ABA-induced de novo meristem formation and sex-type conversion in Ceratopteris gametophytes. [PDF]
SUMMARY Meristems house pluripotent stem cells and sustain continuous growth and organogenesis in land plants. Unlike seed plants, whose gametophytes lack meristems, fern gametophytes initiate and maintain meristems, enabling growth independently from sporophytes. In the model fern Ceratopteris richardii, gametophytes develop into either hermaphrodites

Abstract Intermittent rivers are dynamic ecosystems that experience a predictable or unpredictable loss of surface water and are characterised by changing lotic, lentic (ponding) and dry habitats. Plant communities colonising dry channels during the desiccation stage can be diverse, abundant and differ in their tolerances to water availability and ...

Functions and Regulation of HAM Family Genes in Meristems During Gametophyte and Sporophyte Generations. [PDF]
ABSTRACT A fascinating feature of land plants is their ability to continually initiate new tissues and organs throughout their lifespan, driven by a pool of pluripotent stem cells located in meristems. In seed plants, various types of meristems are initiated and maintained during the sporophyte generation, while their gametophytes lack meristems and ...

Summary PIN‐FORMED auxin efflux transporters, a subclass of which is plasma membrane‐localised, mediate a variety of land‐plant developmental processes via their polar localisation and subsequent directional auxin transport. We provide the first characterisation of PIN proteins in liverworts using Marchantia polymorpha as a model system.

Cell growth dynamics in two types of apical meristems in fern gametophytes
SUMMARY In contrast to seed plants, the gametophytes of seed‐free plants develop pluripotent meristems, which promote and sustain their independent growth and development. To date, the cellular basis of meristem development in gametophytes of seed‐free ferns remains largely unknown.

Abstract Premise Ferns differ from seed plants in possessing a life cycle that includes a small, free‐living, seemingly vulnerable gametophyte stage in which sexual reproduction occurs. Most research on the response of fern gametophytes to environmental stress has been conducted on gametophytes grown in culture or harvested from natural habitats and ...

Selection on the gametophyte: Modeling alternation of generations in plants
Abstract Premise The degree of gametophyte dependence on the sporophyte life stage is a major feature that differentiates the life cycles of land plants, yet the evolutionary consequences of this difference remain poorly understood. Most evolutionary models assume organisms are either haploid or diploid for their entire lifespan, which is not ...
