Outcome of Post Esophageal Variceal Band Ligation with Sucralfate and Proton Pump Inhibitor vs. Proton Pump Inhibitor Alone in Cirrhotic Patients

open access: yesNepalese Medical Journal, 2019
Introduction: Endoscopic band ligation is the mainstay of treatment in bleeding varices in cirrhosis.  Subsequent bleeding from the band ulcers is a possible complication.

Tailored Reconstruction of Polycrystalline CuO Nanorods Promotes C─C Coupling in CO2 Electroreduction

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Controlling the polycrystallinity of CuO nanorods enables directional reconstruction into rod‐like structures that stabilize Cu(OH)2 and increase Cu+ ratios, while modulating interfacial water dynamics to enhance C─C coupling and boost C2+ product formation in CO2 electroreduction.

Proton pump inhibitor-refractory gastroesophageal reflux disease: challenges and solutions

open access: yesClinical and Experimental Gastroenterology, 2018
A significant percentage of patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) will not respond to proton pump inhibitor (PPI) therapy. The causes of PPI-refractory GERD are numerous and diverse, and include adherence, persistent acid, functional ...

Self‐Immolative Activatable Nanoassembly toward Immuno‐Photodynamic Therapy in TME

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A quinone methide‐gated, self‐immolative, H2O2‐responsive nano‐photosensitizer (Pyz/PS) is developed for targeted immuno‐photodynamic therapy. Pyz/PS selectively activates within tumor microenvironments, restores photosensitizer activity, generates ROS, and depletes intracellular GSH, enhancing oxidative stress.

The benefits--and limits-- of PPIs with warfarin regimens [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Patients on warfarin + antiplatelet/NSAID regimens are likely to benefit from the gastroprotective effect of PPIs. For patients taking warfarin alone, it's a different story.

Tailoring Redox Active Sites with Dual‐Interfacial Electric Fields for Concurrent Photocatalytic Biomass Valorization and H2 Production

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A rationally engineered bifunctional photocatalyst is reported, which achieves simultaneous selective oxidation of biomass‐derived 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5‐diformylfuran (DFF) and efficient H2 evolution. By precisely positioning Au and Co3O4 on Zn3In2S6 nanosheet, dual interfacial electric fields are well constructed to spatially separate ...

An Exploratory Analysis of Pharmaceutical Price Disparities and Their Implications Among Six Developed Nations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
In our study of 43 drugs, prescription drug prices in several wealthy nations (Australia, Canada, France, Germany, and the U.K.) were much lower than in the U.S. on average, well below relative per capita GDP. There was relatively little difference among

Smart, Bio‐Inspired Polymers and Bio‐Based Molecules Modified by Zwitterionic Motifs to Design Next‐Generation Materials for Medical Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bio‐based and (semi‐)synthetic zwitterion‐modified novel materials and fully synthetic next‐generation alternatives show the importance of material design for different biomedical applications. The zwitterionic character affects the physiochemical behavior of the material and deepens the understanding of chemical interaction mechanisms within the ...

Upper gastrointestinal bleed associated with cholinesterase inhibitor use [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
An 86-year-old man was admitted with a 3-day history of melaena and syncope. He was haemodynamically compromised and anaemic on presentation. His only medical history was mild Alzheimer's disease diagnosed 6 months prior. For this, he was on donepezil, a
