In addition to the physical advantages (Bragg peak), the use of charged particles in cancer therapy can be associated with distinct biological effects compared to X-rays. While heavy ions (densely ionizing radiation) are known to have an energy- and charge-dependent increased Relative Biological Effectiveness (RBE), protons should not be very ...

Laser acceleration of monoenergetic protons via a double layer emerging from an ultra-thin foil
We present theoretical and numerical studies of the acceleration of monoenergetic protons in a double layer formed by the laser irradiation of an ultra-thin film.

GA-OH enhances the cytotoxicity of photon and proton radiation in HPV+ HNSCC cells
IntroductionTreatment-related toxicity following either chemo- or radiotherapy can create significant clinical challenges for HNSCC cancer patients, particularly those with HPV-associated oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma.

High resolution measurements and modeling of auroral hydrogen emission line profiles [PDF]
Measurements in the visible wavelength range at high spectral resolution (1.3 A° ) have been made at Longyearbyen, Svalbard (15.8 E,78.2 N) during an interval of intense proton precipitation.

Morphological control is a fundamental challenge of nanomaterial development. Commonly, hierarchical nanostructures cannot be induced by a single driving force, but obtained through balancing multiple driving forces. Here, a feasible strategy is reported

Particle Therapy: Clinical Applications and Biological Effects
Particle therapy is a developing area of radiotherapy, mostly involving the use of protons, neutrons and carbon ions for cancer treatment. The reduction of side effects on healthy tissues in the peritumoral area is an important advantage of particle ...

On solar protons and polar cap absorption: Constraints on an empirical relationship [PDF]
International audienceA large database of Solar Proton Events (SPE) from the period 1995 to 2001 is used to investigate the relationship between proton flux at geostationary orbit and Cosmic Noise Absorption (CNA) in the auroral zone. The effect of solar

The rate of the proton-proton reaction
We re-evaluate the matrix element for the proton-proton reaction which is important for stellar-evolution calculations and for the solar-neutrino problem. We self-consistently determine the effect of vacuum polarization on the matrix element by first correcting the low-energy scattering data to account for vacuum polarization.
