Lactobacillus protoplast transformation
Plasmid, 1987A method for the transformation of Lactobacillus protoplasts by plasmid DNA is reported. The procedure involves polyethylene glycol treatment of protoplasts to induce DNA uptake. A transformation efficiency ranging from 5 to 1000 transformants per microgram of DNA is achieved; the efficiency of protoplast regeneration ranged from 10 to 20%.

Canadian Journal of Microbiology, 1967Details are given of the conditions which allow vacuolar structures of Fusarium culmorum to be released after osmotic bursting of mycelial protoplasts. Steps in the release of vacuoles are shown. The composition of the suspending medium affects the formation, size, and number of the vacuoles seen in the protoplasts.

Bacterial protoplast fusion: Recombination in fused protoplasts of Streptomyces coelicolor
Molecular and General Genetics MGG, 1978Numerous recombinants arose when protoplasts of S. coelicolor were treated with polyethylene glycol and regenerated on non-selective solid medium. In six-factor crosses, recombination frequencies of more than 10% (up to 17%) were routinely observed. This recombination did not require either of the known sex factors, SCPI and SCP2.
