Expression of HERV-K proviruses in human leukocytes [PDF]

open access: bronzeBlood, 1993
Abstract HERV-K is a 50-copy, human endogenous, class 1 retroviral element that contains some polycistrons with gag, pol, and env open reading frames. Although expression of HERV-K proviruses has been shown in cultured human cell lines, expression of these elements has not been shown in human blood leukocytes.

Endogenous proviruses as “mementos”? [PDF]

open access: bronzeNature, 1997
In a recent News and Views1, J. P. Stoye discussed the potential health risks associated with the spread of endogenous proviruses from pigs and primates through the use of their organs for transplantation into humans. Although the risks to patients and the public from horizontal transmission may be as manageable as he represents, we would like to ...

DNA methylation affecting the expression of murine leukemia proviruses [PDF]

open access: bronzeJournal of Virology, 1982
The endogenous, vertically transmitted proviral DNAs of the ecotropic murine leukemia virus in AKR embryo fibroblasts were found to be hypermethylated relative to exogenous AKR murine leukemia virus proviral DNAs acquired by infection of the same cells.

Unequal distribution of genetically-intact HIV-1 proviruses in cells expressing the immune checkpoint markers PD-1 and/or CTLA-4

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2023
IntroductionHIV-1 persists in resting CD4+ T-cells despite antiretroviral therapy (ART). Determining the cell surface markers that enrich for genetically-intact HIV-1 genomes is vital in developing targeted curative strategies.

Comparative HIV-1 Proviral Dynamics in Two Individuals That Maintained Viral Replication Control with or without Antiretroviral Therapy following Superinfection

open access: yesViruses, 2022
The analysis of the HIV-1 proviral dynamics after superinfection in the context of both natural and antiretroviral therapy (ART)-mediated suppression could yield unique insights into understanding the persistence of viral variants that seeded the ...

Long-term persistence of transcriptionally active ‘defective’ HIV-1 proviruses: implications for persistent immune activation during antiretroviral therapy

open access: yesAIDS (London), 2023
Objectives: People with HIV-1 (PWH) on effective antiretroviral therapy (ART) continue to exhibit chronic systemic inflammation, immune activation, and persistent elevations in markers of HIV-1 infection [including HIV-DNA, cell-associated HIV-RNA (CA ...

The largest HIV-1-infected T cell clones in children on long-term combination antiretroviral therapy contain solo LTRs

open access: yesmBio, 2023
Combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) suppresses viral replication but does not cure HIV infection because a reservoir of infectious (intact) HIV proviruses persists in long-lived CD4+T cells.

Age-Associated Expansion of HIV/SIV Reservoirs in People With HIV and SIV-Infected Macaques. [PDF]

open access: yesAging Cell
Virally suppressed older people with HIV have larger peripheral blood CD4+ T‐cell reservoirs than younger individuals, correlating with CD4+ and CD8+ T‐cell activation. Similar results were seen in SIV‐infected, ART‐treated aged rhesus macaques. ABSTRACT With the advancement of combination antiretroviral therapy (ART), over 50% of people with HIV (PWH)
