Phenazine antibiotic production in liquid culture, on surface agar, and on plant roots by Pseudomonas aureofaciens PGS12 [PDF]

open access: yes
The growth of P. aureofaciens PGS12 was followed in nutrient broth, on nutrient agar, and on plant roots by monitoring cell numbers, the production of the auto inducer N-acyl- L-hexanoyl homo serine lactone (HHL), and the antibiotic phenazine-l ...

Occurrence of infections in dogs receiving ciclosporin in a single‐centre UK referral population

open access: yesJournal of Small Animal Practice, EarlyView.
Objectives The study aimed (a) to describe the occurrence and nature of new infections in dogs receiving oral ciclosporin and (b) to identify any risk factors associated with the development of a new infection whilst receiving ciclosporin. Materials and Methods In this retrospective cohort study, medical records of dogs presented to a private UK ...

Archaeal Genes Code for GGDEF Domain Proteins With Diguanylate Cyclase Activity

open access: yesMolecular Microbiology, EarlyView.
A biofilm‐like mode of growth is hypothesized to be required for the emergence of cellular life. Occurrence of common biofilm gene products in current Bacteria and Archaea is an indication for their previous presence in the last universal common ancestor LUCA and perhaps even in the first universal common ancestor FUCA.

Urban ants as potential mechanical vectors of pathogenic and antibiotic‐resistant bacteria in a Brazilian hospital

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, EarlyView.
Nine ant taxa were identified in a Brazilian hospital, with Tapinoma melanocephalum and Dorymyrmex brunneus being the most abundant. Eighty‐five percent of collected ants yielded detectable bacterial growth, including clinically relevant genera such as Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, Escherichia coli and Pluralibacter.

Effects of Asaia spp. on the development, size and associated microbiomes of two mosquito species of medical importance

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, EarlyView.
Addition of Asaia species to the rearing water of mosquito larvae can affect the structure of the larval microbiome, although these bacteria do not persist to the pupal stage. Asaia inoculation can increase the adult size of males of two mosquito species. The impact of Asaia inoculation on development rate and female size depended on bacterial and host
