Sex in the cold: taxonomic reorganization of psychrotolerant yeasts in the order Leucosporidiales [PDF]

open access: yesFEMS Yeast Research, 2015
Species of Leucosporidiales are a group of psychrotolerant yeasts with biotechnological potential. In the present work, we studied the phenotypic, genetic and sexual characteristics of three species of this genus (Leucosporidium scottii, Leucosporidiella creatinivora and Le. yakutica) to clarify the evolutionary relationship among these closely related

Pseudomonas deceptionensis sp. nov., a psychrotolerant bacterium from the Antarctic [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
During the taxonomic investigation of cold-adapted bacteria from samples collected in the Antarctic area of the South Shetland Islands, one Gram-reaction-negative, psychrotolerant, aerobic bacterium, designated strain M1T, was isolated from marine ...

Cool and Shady: Ecophysiological Preferences of Chrysophytes

open access: yesJournal of Eukaryotic Microbiology, Volume 73, Issue 2, March/April 2026.
ABSTRACT Chrysophyceae (Stramenopiles) are a diverse group of protists widely distributed in various aquatic habitats, including alpine lakes, where they play key ecological roles. Their nutritional modes—phototrophy, heterotrophy, and mixotrophy—enable them to adapt to the unique light and temperature conditions found across altitudinal gradients in ...

Hidden Partners in Diversity: Acidobacteriota and Their Distribution in the Cape Floristic Region

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, Volume 15, Issue 1, February 2026.
Acidobacteriota diversity and abundance investigated in nutrient‐poor fynbos soils of the Cape Floristic Region. Nanopore 16S rRNA sequencing of 26 soil samples from Jonkershoek and Kogelberg identified dominant and rare subdivisions, revealed distinct community compositions, and demonstrated correlations between subdivisions and soil properties ...

Extracellular proteases from eight psychrotolerant antarctic strains

open access: yesMicrobiological Research, 2004
Extracellular proteases from 8 Antarctic psychrotolerant Pseudomonas sp. strains were purified and characterised. All of them are neutral metalloproteases, have an apparent molecular mass of 45kDa, optimal activity at 40 degrees C and pH 7-9, retaining significant activity at pH 5-11.

Comparison of the oxidative stress response of two Antarctic fungi to different growth temperatures

open access: yesPolish Polar Research, 2017
Two fungal strains, isolated from Livingston Island, Antarctica (Penicillium commune 161, psychrotolerant and Aspergillus glaucus 363, mesophilic) were investigated for a relationship between growth temperature and oxidative stress response.

Genome Analysis Reveals Diversity and Functional Potential of Novel Janthinobacterium Species From Subarctic Soils

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, Volume 15, Issue 1, February 2026.
The Pseudomonadota are abundant and diverse members of high‐latitude soils. Here, we describe two novel species, Janthinobacterium silvisoli and Janthinobacterium saanense, of the order Burkholderiales, isolated from tundra heath and northern boreal forest soils.

Microbial oxidation of arsenite in a subarctic environment: diversity of arsenite oxidase genes and identification of a psychrotolerant arsenite oxidiser [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Background Arsenic is toxic to most living cells. The two soluble inorganic forms of arsenic are arsenite (+3) and arsenate (+5), with arsenite the more toxic.
