Physiological response to relaxation as pre-operative therapy to pearl formation in the winged pearl oyster Pteria sterna

Aquaculture, 2017
Abstract This study expands on the criteria for selecting relaxants used in commercial production of pearls, based on the hypothesis that relaxation, before acting at a cellular level, is a stressor that triggers a battery of physiological responses.

Ingestion and digestion of 10 species of microalgae by winged pearl oyster Pteria sterna (Gould, 1851) larvae

Aquaculture, 2004
Ten species of microalgae were tested for ingestion and digestion in Pteria sterna larvae using epifluorescence microscopy to choose an appropriate diet. An experiment was conducted using 2, 4, 5 (straight-hinge) 10 and 22 (umbo stage) day old larvae.

Internal nutrient management associated with gonad quality and successful reproduction in the winged pearl oyster Pteria sterna

Aquaculture, 2013
Abstract The winged pearl oyster Pteria sterna sustains the Mexican pearl industry, but recent problems ensuring the provision of spat for grafting operations have refocused research toward gonad maturation and hatchery production of spat. We used several indicators (morpho-physiological indices, histology, histochemistry, proximal and fatty acid ...

Performance of the winged pearl oyster Pteria sterna (GOULD, 1851), implanted for half-pearl (mabé) production in two size groups

Aquaculture, 2020
Abstract This study generated baseline information relative to overall performance of the winged pearl oyster Pteria sterna implanted at two groups (small and large) for half-pearl (mabe) production. This is a suitable technology to optimize the pearl production in the tropical coasts of Ecuador.

Effect of different nucleus sizes and culture duration on the quality of half pearls (MABÉ) produced by the winged pearl oyster Pteria sterna (Gould, 1851) in Ecuador

Aquaculture, 2022
Abstract This study aims to evaluate the influence of nucleus size and culture duration on the nacre deposition rates of half pearls produced by the winged oyster P. sterna. For the nucleus size study, three different sizes of hemispherical implants were tested; small (9 mm), medium (11 mm) and large (14 mm), each of these treatments was assigned ...

Physiological Capacity of Pinctada Mazatlanica to Receive Xenografts from Pteria Sterna, as a Criterion to Improve Pearl Production and Quality

Fish & Shellfish Immunology
This study reports the survival, hemocyte count and physiological response indicators of pearl oysters Pteria sterna and Pinctada mazatlanica seeded with allografts and xenografts for pearl culture. Two treatments of oysters receiving an allograft (both donor and host were Pt. sterna) or a xenograft (donor was Pt. sterna and host was P.

Recent foundation of Mexican populations of pearl oysters (Pteria sterna) revealed by lack of genetic variation on two mitochondrial genes

Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom, 2005
The rainbow pearl oyster Pteria sterna is distributed along the Mexican Pacific coasts and Gulf of Baja California, where it represents a great economic potential. Five sampled populations collected in Baja California were used to screen two mitochondrial DNA genes that have proven useful in population genetics studies of several other bivalve species.

Annual Reproductive Effort of Pacific Winged Pearl OysterPteria sternaand Its Relation with the Timing for Planning Pearl Seeding Operations

Journal of Shellfish Research, 2009
ABSTRACT Using a combination of stereological and calorimetric methods, we studied reproductive effort of Pacific winged pearl oyster Pleria sterna during an annual cycle in Bahia de La Paz, B.C.S., Mexico. The relationship between changes in the volumetric fraction of germinal and somatic tissues (gonad, digestive gland, adductor muscle, and mantle ...
