POEMS Syndrome: 2026 Update on Diagnosis, Risk‐Stratification, and Management

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Hematology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Disease Overview POEMS syndrome is a life‐threatening syndrome due to an underlying plasma cell neoplasm. The major criteria for the syndrome are polyneuropathy, clonal plasma cell disorder (PCD), sclerotic bone lesions, elevated vascular endothelial growth factor, and the presence of Castleman disease.

Caveolin-1 regulates Rac1 activation and rat pulmonary microvascular endothelial hyperpermeability induced by TNF-α. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
A multiplicity of vital cellular and tissue level functions are controlled by caveolin-1 and it is considered to be an important candidate for targeted therapeutics.

Regional gas exchange evaluation during ex vivo lung perfusion in a swine model of localized lung dysfunction

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Ex vivo lung perfusion (EVLP) allows the evaluation of lungs that do not meet standard transplantation criteria. Current procedures do not permit the identification of regional functional deficits. We investigated the feasibility of assessing lobar gas exchange during EVLP in a swine model.

Differences in the released endothelial microparticle subtypes between human pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells and aortic endothelial cells in vitro

open access: yesExperimental Lung Research, 2013
Circulating endothelial microparticles (EMPs) are membrane vesicles that are shed into the blood stream from activated or apoptotic endothelial cells. We previously reported that circulating EMP numbers significantly increased in stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients and during exacerbation compared with healthy control subjects.

Morphometric analysis of postnatal lung development in the gray short‐tailed opossum (Monodelphis domestica): An ultrastructural study

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract An ultrastructural morphometric analysis of the postnatal development of the lung in the gray short‐tailed opossum (Monodelphis domestica) has been conducted to evaluate the morphofunctional status of this poorly developed marsupial lung immediately following parturition.

Epithelial MAPK signaling directs endothelial NRF2 signaling and IL-8 secretion in a tri-culture model of the alveolar-microvascular interface following diesel exhaust particulate (DEP) exposure

open access: yesParticle and Fibre Toxicology
Background Particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) deposition in the lung’s alveolar capillary region (ACR) is significantly associated with respiratory disease development, yet the molecular mechanisms are not completely understood.

TWEAK/Fn14 Signaling Drives Oxidative Cardiac Injury in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: Evidence From Patient Biomarker Studies, Lupus Mouse Models, and Cardiomyocyte Assays

open access: yesArthritis &Rheumatology, EarlyView.
Objective Cardiac involvement is a major cause of morbidity in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Tumor necrosis factor–like weak inducer of apoptosis (TWEAK) is elevated in SLE, but its contribution to lupus‐associated cardiac injury is unclear. We investigated the role of TWEAK/fibroblast growth factor–inducible 14 (Fn14) signaling in SLE‐related ...

Cultivation and Characterization of Pulmonary Microvascular Endothelial Cells from Chicken Embryos [PDF]

open access: yesPakistan Veterinary Journal, 2013
To improve the understanding on the biological properties of endothelial cells (ECs), a method for the isolation and identification in vitro culture of avian pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells (PMVECs) is described. The isolated and cultured cells

The High‐Sensitivity C‐Reactive Protein−Albumin−Lymphocyte Index Is a Prognostic Marker for All‐Cause and Cardiovascular Mortality in Patients With ST‐Elevation Myocardial Infarction

open access: yesCatheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Inflammation and immune dysfunction may worsen the prognosis of patients with ST‐segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Aims This study aimed to assess whether the high‐sensitivity C‐reactive protein–albumin–lymphocyte index (hsCALLYI) could be used to predict the prognosis of STEMI patients who received emergency ...

Comparison of apoptosis in human primary pulmonary endothelial cells and a brain microvascular endothelial cell line co-cultured with Plasmodium falciparum field isolates

open access: yesBMC Infectious Diseases, 2017
Background Plasmodium falciparum infection can progress unpredictably to severe forms including respiratory distress and cerebral malaria. The mechanisms underlying the variable natural course of malaria remain elusive. Methods The cerebral microvascular
