Mycophenolate Mofetil Treatment Reduces the Risk of Treatment Escalation Due to Vascular Complications in Limited Cutaneous Systemic Sclerosis: Emulation of a Target Trial From the Italian Rheumatology Society SPRING Registry

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective Mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) use in limited cutaneous systemic sclerosis (lcSSc) is relatively uncommon because of the lower fibrotic burden and the predominance of vascular complications. In vitro observations and clinical data from transplanted patients suggest a protective effect of MMF on endothelial function.

Mesenchymal stem cells microvesicles stabilize endothelial barrier function partly mediated by hepatocyte growth factor (HGF)

open access: yesStem Cell Research & Therapy, 2017
Background Mesenchymal stem cells microvesicles (MSC-MVs) stabilize endothelial barrier function in acute lung injury (ALI); however, the detailed mechanism remains to be further defined.

Artificial Intelligence in Systemic Sclerosis: Clinical Applications, Challenges, and Future Directions

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a rare autoimmune disease defined by immune dysregulation, vasculopathy, and progressive fibrosis of the skin and internal organs. Despite advances in care, major complications such as interstitial lung disease (ILD) and myocardial involvement remain the leading causes of morbidity and mortality.

Cellular Responses to Mechanical Cues Across Scales: From Fundamental Insights to Translational Potential

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This review examines how cellular behavior is regulated by mechanical cues transmitted through soft biomaterials, from single‐cell mechanosensing to tissue‐level adaptation. It highlights why physiological relevance, rather than model complexity alone, is critical for translational mechanobiology and introduces a scoring framework linking material ...

Endothelial cell-derived MMP19 promotes pulmonary fibrosis by inducing E(nd)MT and monocyte infiltration

open access: yesCell Communication and Signaling, 2023
Background Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) play important roles in remodeling the extracellular matrix and in the pathogenesis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF).

Hydrogel‐Based Airway‐on‐Tube With Perfusable Endothelial Lumen and Outward Epithelialization

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A hydrogel‐based airway‐on‐tube platform featuring a perfusable endothelial lumen and outward epithelialization is presented. The system supports primary human bronchial epithelial and lung microvascular endothelial coculture under air‐liquid interface conditions.

Secretome profiling of human epithelial cells exposed to cigarette smoke extract and their effect on human lung microvascular endothelial cells

open access: yesScientific Reports
Cigarette smoke (CS) is one of the leading causes of pulmonary diseases and can induce lung secretome alteration. CS exposure-induced damages to human pulmonary epithelial cells and microvascular endothelial cells have been extensively demonstrated ...

Direct Thrombin Inhibitor Dabigatran Compromises Pulmonary Endothelial Integrity in a Murine Model of Breast Cancer Metastasis to the Lungs; the Role of Platelets and Inflammation-Associated Haemostasis

open access: yesFrontiers in Pharmacology, 2022
Activation of the coagulation cascade favours metastatic spread, but antithrombotic therapy might also have detrimental effects on cancer progression. In this study, we characterized the effects of dabigatran, a direct reversible thrombin inhibitor, on ...
