Ballou’s Ancestral Inbreeding Coefficient: Formulation and New Estimate with Higher Reliability
Inbreeding is unavoidable in small populations. However, the deleterious effects of inbreeding on fitness-related traits (inbreeding depression) may not be an inevitable phenomenon, since deleterious recessive alleles causing inbreeding depression might ...

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Study on Pre-Occupancy Purging of Air for a Low Occupancy Office in a Tropical Country [PDF]
Preoccupancy purging of air-conditioned rooms is practiced in buildings in order to remove air contaminants so that acceptable indoor air quality can exist at the start of occupancy, in accordance to standards such as ASHRAE Standard 62-2001.

Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

An isoform of 14‐3‐3 protein regulates transbilayer lipid movement at the plasma membrane
Loss of 14‐3‐3ζ in CHO cells confers resistance to exogenous phosphatidylserine (PS) and impairs endocytosis‐independent inward flip‐flop of fluorescent PS at the plasma membrane. RNAi‐mediated knockdown reproduces this defect, while no additive effect is seen in ATP11C‐deficient cells.

Purging of closed en side-branches in natural gas facilities [PDF]
The problem of purging a horizontal closed end side-branch in a natural gas pipeline is considered in this paper. Experimental results obtained in a scale model are presented, where air and CO2 were used to simulate air and natural gas in the field.

Evaluation of purging methods when sampling for volatile organic compounds from low-yield monitoring Wells [PDF]
The purpose of this laboratory study was to determine the effects various purging procedures have on chlorobenzene and 1,1,1-Trichloroethane concentrations in a simulated monitoring well and how effective purging procedures were in providing ...

pH‐mediated activation of the lysosomal arginine sensor SLC38A9
Cells monitor nutrient levels via the lysosomal transporter SLC38A9 to activate the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1). This study reveals that SLC38A9 function is regulated by pH. We identified histidine 544 as a critical pH sensor that undergoes conformational changes to control amino acid efflux from lysosomes; therefore, it ...
