The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Expression, purification and initial characterization of human meprin v from Pichia pastoris

open access: yes, 2022
S.75-81Human meprin v (h-meprin v), a single-zinc metalloendoprotease of the astacin family, is potentially involved in disorders such as fibrosis and Alzheimer's disease. Here, we describe the expression of the enzyme in the yeast Pichia pastoris. The N-

Willingness and influencing factors of adults receiving Hemodialysis to use mobile healthcare apps: a cross-sectional study

open access: yesBMC Nephrology
Purpose Grounded on the Technology Acceptance Model and integrating theories of perceived risk and trust, this study explores the willingness of adults receiving hemodialysis to use mobile healthcare application services as well as its influencing ...

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Cardiac valve calcification and risk of cardiovascular or all-cause mortality in dialysis patients: a meta-analysis

open access: yesBMC Cardiovascular Disorders, 2018
Background Vascular calcification is a risk factor for the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease and mortality in dialysis patients. Nevertheless, the association between cardiac valve calcification (CVC) and the outcome of dialysis is still illusive ...

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Purification of bromelain from pineapple wastes by ethanol precipitation

open access: yes, 2012
Bromelain is an aqueous extract of pineapple that contains a complex mixture of proteases and non-protease components. These enzymes perform an important role in proteolytic modulation of the cellular matrix in numerous physiologic processes, including ...

Molecular mechanisms of hydrogen sulfide against uremic accelerated atherosclerosis through cPKCβII/Akt signal pathway

open access: yesBMC Nephrology, 2019
Background Cardiovascular disease is the most common complication and leading cause of death in maintenance hemodialysis patients. The protection mechanism of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and the specific role of conventional protein kinase C βII (cPKCβII)/Akt

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

High-yield expression and purification of a monotopic membrane glycosyltransferase

open access: yes, 2009
Membrane proteins are essential to many cellular processes. However, the systematic study of membrane protein structure has been hindered by the difficulty in obtaining large quantities of these proteins.
