Excitatory synaptic currents in Purkinje cells
Proceedings of the Royal Society of London. Series B: Biological Sciences, 1990The N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) and non-NMDA classes of glutamate receptor combine in many regions of the central nervous system to form a dual-component excitatory postsynaptic current. Non-NMDA receptors mediate synaptic transmission at the resting potential, whereas NMDA receptors contribute during periods of postsynaptic depolarization and play a ...

We present a mathematical/computer model of a Purkinje cell. The model is a binary dendritic tree of Rall compartments connected to trunk, soma and then Hodgkin-Huxley axon. We perform studies of the model for different parameters, especially those provided by Shelton, and Pellionisz and Linas.

Dynamic Synchronization of Purkinje Cell Simple Spikes
Journal of Neurophysiology, 2006Purkinje cells (PCs) integrate all computations performed in the cerebellar cortex to inhibit neurons in the deep cerebellar nuclei (DCN). Simple spikes recorded in vivo from pairs of PCs separated by <100 μm are known to be synchronized with a sharp peak riding on a broad peak, but the significance of this finding is unclear.

Purkinje cells from five autopsy cases (a premature newborn infant, a GM1-gangliosidosis, an olivo-ponto-cerebellar atrophy, a multisystem atrophy involving the spinal cord and the brain stem, and a woman of 82 years) were studied using the Golgi impregnation technique.

Cell Counts of Purkinje and Inferior Olivary Neurons in the ‘Hyperspiny Purkinje Cells’ Mutant Mouse
European Journal of Neuroscience, 1992AbstractThe mutant mouse ‘hyperspiny Purkinje cells’(hpc) has morphologically abnormal Purkinje cells and below normal intracerebellar calbindin‐D28k, a calcium‐binding protein that, in the cerebellum, is found only in the Purkinje cells. We counted the Purkinje cells on serial sections stained with thionin or labelled with anti‐calbindin‐D28k ...

Dendrite Formation of Cerebellar Purkinje Cells
Neurochemical Research, 2009During postnatal cerebellar development, Purkinje cells form the most elaborate dendritic trees among neurons in the brain, which have been of great interest to many investigators. This article overviews various examples of cellular and molecular mechanisms of formation of Purkinje cell dendrites as well as the methodological aspects of investigating ...

MicroRNA mechanisms instructing Purkinje cell specification
NeuronMicroRNAs (miRNAs) are critical for brain development; however, if, when, and how miRNAs drive neuronal subtype specification remains poorly understood. To address this, we engineered technologies with vastly improved spatiotemporal resolution that allow the dissection of cell-type-specific miRNA-target networks.
